Would it not have made better sense to take 2 to 3 years to do the "consultation" and design the new huts before burning or demolishing the old ones. I feel pretty confident that the huts would have stood for that long and provided emergency shelter should it have been needed. Any port in a storm ! A patch of scorched earth is no good to man or beast.

They say "dismantled" and "decommissioned", we say "burnt down". One nation divided by 2 languages. Face it, Te Urewera is from now on for Tuhoe. They have a different attitude to conservation (cultural harvesting?) and management of natural landscapes to pakeha. This is our future.

My guess considering the talk of 'cultural experience' etc is that the huts will be replaced with big flash ones like on the Great Walks and the whole show will be turned into a big tourist facility modelled on Doc's Great Walks

It also seems as though he wants to round up visitors and offer them a genuine experience of being a fleeced tourist.

That would've allowed wriggle room for not demolishing all huts. By demolishing them now they force the issue. And if Doc/the government don't front up with the $$$ they will blame the entire issue on DoC.

"seig heil" was a NZFS hunter, knew him well.

Tuhoe have stated that they are looking to keep possums at a low “sustainable” level where possums creat employment for them.

This effectively means “Predator free 2050” has just been blown completely out of the water.

And now Ngai Tahu are looking at doing the same.

Ha ha ha - every bloody possum trapper knows low numbers mean get out of that area and find one with numbers otherwise waste of time - unless they are going to be subsidized by guess who - and given size of Te Urewera how much will be covered my guess less than 10% if that - I wish them luck but after 35 years in that industry I remain skeptical

Realistic total building replacement cost for each independent hut?

We all know insured house /dwelling can get burned down and a insurance company will replace it on a like for like basis what was previously there in the first place.....hopefully?

So what is the true financial cost of replacing each independent hut to exactly match exactly what was their in the first place?

haha this is so ridiculous its a good laugh now,NZ has become a joke nothing gets achieved in this country these days.Its time for a Trump character to lead this place with the focus on Winning at everything and actually producing results.

To "officially" replace them your looking at a lot of money. And theres no way you'd be able to make them exactly as they were.
Because "government" will no doubt be involved the consultants would cost more than the build. I think someone on here does building work for DOC he'd be more clued up on it. The only way to replace them as they were is illegal builds or Tuhoe gets exempted from the building code.

Yeah would likely have to be to code, unless there is some sort of exemption in district plan etc for backcountry accomo. You are looking at million upon millions of dollars to replace and years of planning, red tape cutting, consultation and construction.

This is such a poorly though out idea, a staged replacment approach would have been so much easier, cheaper and would retain access to visitors and locals alike.

I'm probably more sympathetic to the idea that Maori have more say in the management of their cultural lands than some on here, but fark me have tut made a dogs breakfast of this.

If we are going to be apply these models of governance going forward they need a serious overhaul on how they are structured or this place is going to dissolve I to ruin

Looks like TUT are meeting their objectives by not having huts to spend maintainence money on.
I think there will be precious few huts replacing these.
