FLIR is good, but dont drop one because i hate fixing the f...ing things ! NV is far easier to repair
Shot show is in a couple weeks - new models be released then
That’s the Time for latest tech to often be released
FLIR will have more .12 cored cameras annouced then too - that’s about 30% more resolution
I havent used the Flir but have used a number of Yukon optics ones and rate them highly.
Best to get a model to suit you intended use which is?
Yeah I've used the same Model as Cam.
Flir is shit.
Here's some deer at 700 odd yards with a handheld

This is an old outdated model now, memory is dodgy but I think these reds were around 450y away on a resonably open face but it had been raining all day that is why there is no definition of the scrub and rocks as everything is rain temprature.

just be sure to buy the latest model to suit your needs - it’s a big investment may as well have the latest model (vs last years car etc - unless it’s a clearance of course) especially at this time of year
That image has no contrast at all and you make that comment as a comparasion to something being good
I've looked through a few Flirs and can confidently say that our Pulsars are better. Let's have a side by side comparison, between dollar for dollar units.
you can buy a shit ton of ammo for that cash.....
For thermal gear, avoid shell suits
Attachment 84234
Pulsar Helion XP38
Best of what I have used/witnessed in field
Like:
The starting magnification of 1.9
Handles like its part of your hand
Clarity and definition - excellence
Built in rechargeable battery 5.5 - 8 hours (a spare batt is cheap)
Negative
Slow to turn off (3 seconds have to hold button)
Using mine every day now
Was thinking of upgrading to a XP50 - but the start magnification is 2.5
Think it be OK with extra aperture size ???
Do not like the Thermals with 3.8+ magnification - fine if you on open farm land etc, but I found too strong in normal bush edge/river etc hunting
Just get an extra lens, we had a few in stock but not sure if they've been sold to dealers.
I like low magnification, higher magnification good for central South Island, distant hills etc.
The XP is better than the XQ because of its higher pixel count, which is even more important now that our sensors are 17µ. The smaller the sensor (due to reducing pixel size), the higher the magnification for any given focal length. High magnifications from short focal length lenses delivers a poor image. This isn't just for thermals, but all digital optics, including cameras. Same principle holds for analogue cameras, except the actual grain size doesn't dictate format size.
More info re the extra lenses please
Mentioned in all the literature in passing but have never seen the lenses listed separately and pricing etc.
Have Helion xp 50 due to arrive from you via Gunworks around mid April and very interested in the xp28 style lens as an option.
XP50 intended for big open SI country but the lower magnification lens might be ideal for some applications especially scanning for possums.
I used the previous XQ50 for a couple of months last year and was delighted as to how it performed after having tried @223nut Flir the previous winter. The Flir was a complete waste of space ... no offence @223nut
None taken, I fully agree, my leupold is much more suited to what I need one for
my xp50 will be here within a month and I'm sure we will catch up some time this winter @223 so you can have a play.
Sadly another surgery in late June and a couple of months rehab on that one will clip my wings again.
But got a handy deer yesterday evening so can still afford to eat well at least after the big $s on the thermal.
Really needs to be in the open, can see through 'light' vegetation if they are just inside the bush. It's the same as using your own eyes really. Works in daylight, useful for things other than hunting, I.e. Heat leaks in our house, finding studs (works on some walls) kiwi spotting etx
The factory have only just started to ship lenses and quantities are limited. We received around 20% of what we ordered which were all pre-sold. I know our next order is due next week, so I'll see what we have left.
The interchangeable lenses work well for the XP, easy to swap. I'm a tad disappointed that we can't get 'spare' lenses for the XQ. I've tried, but the manufacturer refuses to supply. I think, it's because the lenses can be damaged if the force in removing and replacing them is placed upon the focussing mechanism. Also, it's quite a fine thread which can be crossed easily. Having said that, I don't know why they don't use the same bayonet mount for both sensor sizes. Maybe that for next year....
The XP28 is brilliant for walking in the dark, and for use at close quarters. The field-of-view is massive.
Incidentally, the Pulsar Helion XQ19 is being phased-out in favour of the Pulsar Helion XQ28. I have mixed feelings about this. For the same price, the XQ28 is better value, and will have better distance and identification characteristics, but I would still rather the 19mm lens for night shooting, as it's easier to walk around in the dark with. But market forces dictate design, and from experience, the majority are after better distance.
Just received shipment of lenses, and we have 8 surplus 50mm lenses for the XP Helion. I can't remember how much these are, I will have to check the Pulsar MRRP. PM me, or drop an email ant@acad.co.nz
Dose/has anyone traveled international with one of these Pulsar units?
Thinking of coming from the UK with mine and wondering what needs to be done, if anything.
I’ll not be coming through the states!
To avoid any problems, apply for an export permit, visit this website for info:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/controls-on-dual-use-goods
Once you have your export license, you will not need an NZ import license. Also, if you require servicing, we can ask the manufacturer to accept this item for repair. You would at least be able to send it back to the UK distributor, but if we could add it to our monthly warranty returns, it would be quicker and less hassle.
The UK export license is the same as European, but not sure how Brexit will change this. According to this report, controls are tightening, so best play by the rules:
