    Tira Lodge Kaweka's

    Hi everyone

Has anyone got some good info on walking in to Tira Lodge?
Many clearing? Whats the terrain like?

Is it worth the walk or is there equal opportunities closer to Kaweka road, as il be walking in from there.
Dont mind a walk, will have some free time.

Also i should state im new to hunting deer but do like my fishing, i will definitly spend a night at rocks ahead hut if i can hunt there and fish, that would be perfect!!

    Cheers

This time of year Tira (Kelvinator Lodge) is going to be cold and possibly fruitless considering your experience. Id stick lower. Rocks Ahead and Oma biv should be more your style, especially if you want to do some fishing. Your going to come over the J? If so theres still a bit of snow up there.
Considering its going to be a long walk and you are a bit new to hunting Id suggest you stick to some of the front country (if you want to go soon). The back country will be so much better come Spring (and not town Spring, more Dec onwards).

The Ngaruroro river will be pretty big so don't count on walking down that until late summer. In November, you could stop at Ballards hut or walk in to Back ridge hut if you want to try for early spring tops hunting. Venison Tops is very nice, but well known, so you might contend with people who've flown in. Going across the Kaweka range (over Kaweka J) the key thing is your experience in tramping as it's quite high and exposed = potential getting lost in mist or hypothermia if weather goes wrong. Easy walking, but cold and rain can cripple you. One idea would be to walk in from Puketitri to Te Puia hut and hot springs, nice bush hunting, then if weather and confidence is good work your way up to Makino hut (I suppose its still there) then on to Ballards. If weather is bad, spend time at Middle Hill hut. Best is to go with a mate, not on your own if your experience is limited.
