    Tophouse Road Closure, Hanmer

Hey guys, does anyone live in or has been out to the st James area behind hanmer in the last couple of weeks? I see on the doc website that the tophouse Road is closed after the st James homestead so just wondering if anyone can confirm this. I have a block on the molesworth next week and unsure if I’ll be able to access it

    Cheers

So from what I have been told by another hunter here in town is that yes it is officially closed at the St James homestead due to some washout. But there is no gate and it appears that some people are still going further, but I would guess you would need to be on very good terms with your insurer if you had problems.

I haven't been over the back as we call it recently due to too many other commitments and weather but plan on doing so soonish. By the way its pouring down this afternoon and blowing so the rivers will be up again, hopefully by the time you go it will be better weather.

Hope that has cleared some things up for you @Southern-Hunter

Thanks very much mate. I’m hoping to be able to get to island gully hut. Any idea on how bad the wash out is and what’s involved to get through it?
    Thanks again

    I learnt something new today

When I looked up Tophouse Rd, google maps took me to a place near St Arnaud. But that is the Tasman version.

On closer inspection, I see that the road from Hanmer to Lake Tennyson is Tophouse, and after that it turns into Rainbow Rd.

Hopefully back there later this year for a return to Island Gully Hut

Yep even for me the two can get confusing and I lived in the Nelson/Tasman area for 15 years. But I only took up hunting last year as a what some might call a mid life crisis and I just call getting old and finally starting to figure out what I might want to do when I grow up.

Make sure you take chains, getting up over island saddle can be interesting after a good snow dump and you are on the other side..... rathe puckering descent with a decent drop if you go over the edge, had one trip woth all 4 chains on the landcruiser and that only just got through, winch bar became a snow plough

Shit looks like I may not get over if there’s snow then. I haven’t got chains for my wagon yet haha

I’ll head in anyway and see how I get on. If it’s snowing I won’t bother risking it

Was baking hot here today but snow is forecast for Wednesday, typical spring weather.
