    trapping pigs

Have gained access to a small bush block with a bit of pork running around the owner wants them gone. after looking over the place it is not always suitable to shoot there but trapping would be shit hot. i have never trapped pigs before and are hoping some wisdom can be shared on the matter. and their is room for a helper if you live near waitomo. the meat would be evenly shared.

Mucko they do that a lot in Texas. I recall looking in to it years back now and I found a really good design and lots of advice about baiting by looking up "Pig Trap" and "Hog Trap" on Google.

that is cunning as a shit house rat,

for bait use meat or maize
if there is turkeys in the area use meat or turkey

approach the trap with your gun loaded they go apeshit when they see you and can wreck traps

you can tell the local dog ranger you have a wandering dog problem and he will deliver you a trap free of charge, if you happen to catch a pig in it well oh dear what a shame

No the one that I recall was more an oblong shaped steel cage with a gate that fell when the trap was sprung. It was as solid as and would have stood up to the biggest boar no matter how pissed off it got.

I used to use foot snares around the hot stuff on Te Kopia rd years ago. Just make sure you check the trap each day.

Here are some pics of mine, i have made 2 and they are always out on loan, perfect for where you cant shoot or run dogs

Get the pigs feeding on something, anything, then when they are you can add maize, they cant say no to the maize once they discover it

When the pigs are feeding in your spot open trap up and bait it but dont set it, let them feed in it for a couple of nights and walk out again, then bait and set and your almost certain to nail one or 2

Remember if you do catch one there could be some close by hanging with the trapped pig

My trap door opens in, but not out, i tie it open to prefeed them then when i set it i use a small stick to open the door enough to get there nose in and open door to push in, stick falls away and door closes behind them, other pigs can still get in also, this is why i prefeed them, they have had a feed in there and are happy to work there way back in again

Ask some questions, im hopless at explaining, and no expert but do catch them

The circular ones such as in the above pic, or a heart shaped one, very similar, work great. Very simple to put up, use the mesh from an old mesh silo but cut it down to about shoulder height. No need for a gate, just use the mesh as in the pic, pigs will push it open to get in, but cant find how to get it open. They have to be pegged down real good as an old man boar will lift up the edge, and I do know of some pigs that climbed the mesh to get out. Must have thrown themselves at it and then used their back legs to push on over. Maize, apples, spuds, dead stuff all work fine. And when you arrive the pork is still fresh and not stressed, until they see you or your dog. Also you dont have to check it every day. Have seen one in North Canterbury that was maybe 20-25 metres across, absolutely littered with bones and stuff, had been there for years and caught hundreds of pigs. Cocky would only check it every week or 2 as there was plenty of tucker inside to keep the pigs happy, best catch was 17 pigs in one go! Check out clearing sales or cockies yards to find an old silo mesh, can be expensive to buy new. Good luck, post some pic's.

a mate has a silage wagon that he has converted to a pig trap funny you say 17 pigs is your mates best because thats what he told me too.

I personally wouldnt use the wire rope ones even tho I restored one they are far too nasty on the leg and would make a hell of a mess. thats not really something I want to inflict on a pig for possibly 12 hours. each to their own

the live capture traps are the go. ones iv used are similar to moonhunts except they have a falling door triggered by the pig taking the bait, that way you can transport the pig out alive if need be and seed up a different area where pigs are wanted
