Sika, reds or fallow in the area? I often find fresh scrapes and rubbings right through from Feb-June mainly in sika country. I always assumed that they just give the trees a good hiding both while stripping velvet and when worked up during the rut. I have never seen them smashing trees during the rut but have heard it a number of times, heard it just two weeks ago. Its not unusual to find fresh rut sign at this time of year.
