TWO Questions

Please be candid and tell me straight.

I'm 68 now, have a metal and plastic shoulder and very limited use of my left arm...about 25%...

I have back troubles and broke some bones at L-3,4, and 5.

I need to get into decent shape again and am badly out of shape right now. I'll be back farming this summer (northern Hemi summer), and that goes a long way toward getting the blubber off and the muscles awake again.

Money is a real limitation.

Is there any use in trying to fulfill my dream of hunting in your great country, or should I be d@mned glad I've done all the things I have over the years. Is the flight there a killer?

The flight is boring, sitting on your bum for hours, but the planes are awesome take plenty of walks to stretch, get a bulk head seat. Or upgrade to a better class than cattle!:)

Oh and Seeing NZ is worth the pain:cool:

It would depend on the species you want to hunt for a start. There are a couple of guys in wheel chairs on here that hunt so anything is possible.

Flying the twelve hours or so from LA to Auckland will be a pain in the arse but it always is, although I would expect that with your lower back issues it will be worse for you than most. Still I reckon it will be worth it as we have a lovely country here and folks are mostly very hospitable. You are way too young to roll over and give up on life so come on over and fulfill your dream. There are plenty of members on here that could probably show you the ropes on public land.

Iv been to the UK a few times the best thing I found to help with long flights is grandmars sleeping pill,s that's not the brand but the source !! there great I stay up long enough to have a feed pop a pill & lights out for a good 4-5 hours:) makes all the difference along with ear plugs neck brace & blindfold !

there will be ample opportunities for you to hunt over here, you dont have to do the crazy 30 mile 5 day expeditions you see on tv to hunt around here theres plenty of places for day hunts.

Start by looking at the cost of flights.
You're in Nevada? Your best option is direct to Auckland NZ, out of San Francisco or Los Angeles, via AirNZ.
AirNZ offers the only direct flights from the West Coast of the USA.
Or via Hawaii with Hawaiian Airlines if you don't think you'll manage the direct flight.
Count on a 12 hr direct flight.
Then factor in internal flights to get you to your intended hunting area.

If you don't do it you will never fulfill your dream, sounds like you've been through enough pain already so it can only get better. There's lots of good buggers on here that will point you in the right direction.

plenty of "behind the wire" or even a few not fenced but plurry tame outfits that can get you to an animal via vechile and farm tracks...they will cost a bit but its all a matter of what you have in mind to do/hunt and how you want to do it.
a good bugger with private land access or a farmer themselves will have options for reds and fallow maybe a pig ,definitely a wallaby,possum,hare,rabbit,ducks n geese. a thar or chammy will be harder to arrange...thar could be easiest of the two.

First: don't give up. I recently had a total hipjoint replacement followed by a major infection that took 4 months to clean up, followed by a stroke and I"M about to pick up my new rifle for a stalk in the roar. NOPE. Don't give up

Come for the fishing!

As mentioned, come on over ! AirNZ business class has lie flat seats which is handy for the long overnight flight, and direct ex West Coast - watch out for cheap deals which fly through Hawaii or Australia, as it'll add hours to your journey. They also are Star Alliance members with United. Don't fly economy though, it's just too cramped for too long.

Then come and shoot and fish, it's an awesome country and you'll love it :thumbsup:

Flight will suck but so so worth it mate.
Lots of options for easy hunting depending on the species your after

Thanks for the kind thought Mate. IN fact, the hip and the stroke are only parts of the picture. I've also had a foot amputated and both shoulder rotator cuffs repaired, spleen ruptured and removed and a shattered wrist pinned>The stroke worried me most, but now seems to be okay. And YES, it is still well worth the efoort to get out into the bush and harvest clean meat. Giving up is never the best option IMHO.

I know you're after a hunt but I'm more than happy to take you out for a trout fish if you're interested in getting in to some big browns if that interests ya

And after all the fun, sightseeing, hunting , fishing and shopping, you can either claim refugee status, where we will fix your teeth, house and feed you and put you on a benefit, you can then bring over the rest of your close relatives so you won't be lonely, or you a free to leave and fly back to that awesome country you live in and I'll be visiting in the next 12 months!. Nothing new

I'm trying to arrange it, but the wife won't fly, especially on a long trip like NZ or Africa. I would have to fly economy class and suck it up. Money no longer flows in more than a trickle.

What are the gun laws there re: bringing a drilling or maybe my 12ga/8X57JR cape gun? It has a second set of 12X12 barrels and is a compact package to travel with. It has a 1-4 Leupold in claws, and I don't like shooting over 200-250 yards anymore. It's moderately accurate...1 1/2 to 2 inches at 100 yards.

I see Air NZ is somewhat firearms friendly. I would no doubt bring only one gun...a drilling, and probably one in 12ga and 7X65R. How would I buy 12ga ammo in NZ, and what permits are needed to bring in a hunting gun??

I can book a flight from August 1st and departing August 15 for about $1,200.00 US. Should I book to Auckland or Wellington, and where should I stay? How are car rental prices?

Auckland, rental cars are not expensive if your not fussy, Rolls and Ferrari get up there! plenty of hire companies to choose from, motel $130/ 150 NZ. Night for a good one, I go with ,last minute, website for bookings, ferry between the islands isn't cheap but depends on if you take a car with you, on a good day it is an awesome trip thru the sounds, on a bad day it just ain't enjoyable, but you can buy a pie and have an alcoholic drink on board if your stomach is strong! Just remember I'll be asking the same questions on your country shortly!:thumbsup:

Might pay to look at flying into Christchurch depending on what species, up north they r rather lacking in chamoai and thar, but then the 'mainland' is missing sika

The body wouldn't make a chamoai or thar hunt, and even a small fall could cost me my left arm, so they're not on the list. I'd like to do a little hunting, a little fishing, then ruin all the NZ women for you locals. :drool:

I'm not fussy about cars and lodging. LOL...I once stayed in a motel called the A-1 Motel. The rain was coming down in buckets late one night, and I needed to get off the road and hold up somewhere. It was the only choice.

I learned why it was the A-1. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was "a 1". :x_x:

You should bring any official U.S. paperwork that identifies you as a legal firearms owner and, on arrival, go to the airport police station where you can apply for a Visitor's Firearms Licence, which will be valid for one year. Not sure what the fees are.

We don't have any form of gun registration in my State, but we use a USA Customs 4457 Form that states the item (gun) belongs to the traveler. It is also what we use to get our guns back into the country.

It's going to be a 50/50 chance of making this happen, and I am extremely happy about the warm messages and offers here.
