    The Unluck Fallow Humel

I have started to collect some meat for The Toby Shoot in November. I Don't really know how much I'll need for the weekend but though I'd better make a start.
I spoke to a farmer I do work for, Told him why I wanted some venison. He said there were quiet a few Fallow and Reds down on the river bed and told me to get into them.
Last night I headed up the valley with one of the guys I work with. to see if we could manage and make a start and get some meat for you guys that are coming for the shoot. Spent a couple hours walking and glassing the riverbed, there was so much fresh sign but no deer. I said there's still one bit to try up past the hut It was getting dark by now so would have to use spot light. We walked along the edge of a Lucerne paddock nothing in it next to it was a rape paddock. this time we were in luck about a 100 metre out we saw a fallow Doe grazing. I got a good steady on a fence post with the 6.5x55 game over so to speak. It took us a bout 15 minute to find the little bugger in the rape, It was then that we found out what we had got. Bloody nice animal good weight would have been around 45/50Kg dressed but only 2 really small stumps for antler by no means is it a trophy. some day I will get something worth mounting but last night was neither my night or the Humel's

Shot a Red Hummel once. He was huge, plenty of fat and great eating. I clearly recall it too two of us to lift the bugger onto the ute and we ended up with 167 kg of meat from him and a set of back wheels from another normal stag.

Thinking back it was about April 1997 or 1998. Wrote a story about him for the Rod and Rifle Magazine a few months later which paid for the mountain of sausages we got proceeded.

The Brits get Hummel's when there's a lack of feed around. So could be that

    Firstly I am no expert.

They both just look like shitty spikers/prickets to me. @Tahr s one I have shot and seen others shoot many similar stags.....Nelson has shit genetics and in some areas very shit mineral belts as far as heads are concerned.
Neither of the heads look uncommon to me.
