Some good genes in there for sure. Animal numbers not high, but depends on how much waro and 1080 has been going on.

Congratulations on your success. This is a stunning area. From a visual perspective it would be one of just a handful of places that defy description in terms of grandeur and awesome beauty.

There's no getting away from the fact that even for us South Islanders its a little steep in places. For you as a North Islander... its the kind of steepness you'll describe as "vertical". Where its not vertical, its bloody near over-hanging. But admittedly that's right up at the Terminus.

I've not hunted that area myself but from what I hear the numbers are not that high, however you should be able to get onto a few Teddy Boys when the conditions are right. You'll almost certainly be better off up high in the basins. Don't forget to take your binos. And some sandfly repellant. Gallons of sandfly repellant. Keep your eyes peeled for some of the native birds which are highly likely to be around... such as Kea, Whio and Kiwi.

No matter how you look at it, you're in for a treat. Whether you shoot the stag of a lifetime or not shoot anything at all you're going to have a fantasic trip if you take the time to relax and take in your surroundings.

The whole Young, Wilkin area, etc is the sort of place that you might just pull a ripper out of, generally not high numbers but with the reduction in waro it’s probably better than it has been in the past. Good luck

Hamish I just spoke to a Wanaka based chopper pilot. He said they haven’t done any WARO for two years but Alpine have two 500’s getting stuck into the Wanaka blocks. Reckons, based on previous patterns they will do them over pre roar too. They won’t get ‘em all but it makes it tougher!!!

Wallis's have been shooting Haast Range last fortnight ,getting good numbers.

Alpine has a deal with Pak n Save to supply ven mince. According to an Alpine pilot I spoke with back in March, this translated to around 100 animals a week.
