    Waihopai area

    Hi All,
Going on holiday to see Family in the Waihopai Valley and wondering if there are any decent areas around there for hunting for a rookie
    Cheers

Plenty of areas. Just no access unless you happen to know a nice farmer who will let you cross their land to acess crown land.

When I look on WAMS there are plenty of legal roads (ie paper roads) that cross farm land to the DOC land. https://www.wams.org.nz/wams_desktop/index.html THere is opportunity for access here.

The access to Lake Alexander is a $20 donation PP to cross the farmers land and park your vehicle. If I remember correctly.

I believe most people hunting the Waihopai either know someone, as it's tightly controlled by the land owners to protect from poaching (understandably), or fly in to Ferny Gair or Glazebrook etc.

Good info, although there is a legal road that provides access all the way in on the north bank of the river. The problem is the formed track doesn't follow that legal road.

Yes I think it's who you know not what you know. Managed a trip down there in march and got taken into some private land.

Be careful about so called paper roads. They deviate from original and then you are in trouble. Talk to the people you staying with.... They will know someone

I've hunted that area twice. More animals than you can shake a stick at... but yeah access it tightly guarded! :-)

I live in the Waihopai and do most of my hunting up here. Don't just go walkabout most paper roads are well off the actual tracks. If you have family here they will have contacts.
