I'd be really wary the closer you are to Opotiki. The pull over areas at the start of the gorge get smash and grabs

Many years ago I went through in the morning and there was a Toyota Corona parked by the swing bridge, came back in the arvo and it was on its roof with the mag wheels gone!! Maybe it’s got better, I don’t know! Hahahaha

Like most places there is a risk these days. The guy causing a lot of trouble at the gisborne end is no longer there i believe. Getting your car out of site helps or camping next to it at night time

A colleague of mine is from there, and informs me their whanau has no issues slashing tyres, and does so regularly. Plenty of spotlighting from the road at night, saw 4 vehicles spotlighting in there on Saturday.

I would try and get dropped off. Raukumara and urewera is really bad for car safety.

    Even murupara is still bad.

Best bet is to have an old shitter as a hunting wagon.

Could try print out some sovereignty shit and leave in view on seat, or stick a sovereingty bumper sticker on. May or may not work.

The 4 spotlighters I mentioned were only during the time it took me to drive through the gorge, about 10pm ish, so who knows how many outside of that time frame. Another time on same trip I saw 7 spotlighting.

In these trying times I wouldn't be surprised the dogs will be out knowing that the law and services will be focused (overwhelmed) elsewhere and will make most of the opportunity to take and do what they want to do.

there is a courier that leaves gisborne in the afternoon that goes to tauranga he takes passages. You might be able to leave your ride at matawai near or outside the cops house and get a ride in and arrange a pick up on hes way back past.
But with news my wife has told me looks like the roar and duck shooting is cancelled
