Wap x
Mate shot these last week, lower kaimai
Look like wap or cross to me. the 4 pointer measured 900 across and 700 tall.
Both big animals (240kg dressed), 8 pointer had bent nose (campylognathie).
Am aware of elk type animals escaped from a farm not too far away years ago
Maybe a decent head abouts.
Have shot reds and a fallow in the area.

Nothing about those photos say elk/wapiti to me

When 'Banjo' was the stockman at the now closed down deer processing plant on the Kaimai's he had on two occasions had Wap or WapX stags escape and head into the bush....over the years I have shot a couple of what I guess was their offspring, big young creamies....one newbie hunter (forum member) hesitated too long as his confusion of animals colour as it was a much lighter than a red's....grandson a couple of weeks ago thermaled a group of animals where one was much larger than the others, confirmed by another hunter (forum member) who hunted the area in the roar just gone as a large hind.

Got any pictures of the carcass?
Rump patch and hind quarter shape is a good indicator.

I grew up in this area. We shot a hind that weighed in at 160kgs gutted last year of high school. It looked completely like any red id seen just bigger. A mate also shot a 12 in there that was huge (in body) but looked just like a red. High Pedicles relatively lightweight timber but 41inchs long. We had also heard the escape from the meatworks stuff and I'd believe the odd animal in there's got some Wap blood.
Doesn't really matter as there's no way to tell for sure or how far back the blood goes. I wouldn't go it expecting one. Just as much luck in finding a wap cross as a generally big old red stag.
