Post what you know. Who's working where, when, what's the venison price doing, etc.
Just trying this out to see if we can keep a thread going with useful information perhaps. Will delete if it turns to shit.

Looks like Ruahine are to be open for 12 month recovery. The closed areas are still going to remain closed but the 1st Dec - 30th April closed period will be removed with 2/3 of the park available to recovery 12 months of the year. DOC chose to not consult with park users and has rolled this out off their own bat.
Edit: pretty sure I've just ruined the thread from the get go. Sorry, thought it was pretty relevant.
Better that than the alternative
Even with WARO operating from May to November in the Ruahines there are still deer to be found. Would still rather WARO than 1080.
If the current closed areas remain closed I do not see an issue. I did 3 months up there in the machine and it was limiting to say the least. Especially when you seen shitloads of animals ferrying thru the closed areas.
I was surprised at the amount of deer in that range.
You would have to be retarded not to get onto deer up there no matter where you hunt.
Can we not bring the 1080 shit into this thread? Thanks.
It's relevant as long as people don't go off on irrelevant tangents about 1080.
The reality seems to be that the upper management levels at DoC have an entrenched mindset that any WARO is good due to it resulting in free dead deer for them, although the actual biodiversity value of the significantly reduced WARO take in recent years is extremely debatable in my opinion.
I was up there in 2011. Never seen another machine.
It wasn't worth losing my Waro or supplier licence to be honest. It was my only form of income at the time and it was good while it lasted. Had to face reality when price dropped and machine costs went up.
Would go back and do it in a heartbeat but not at today's costs and return.
I think because of some stocked countries now supplying under the EU we will never see feral venison at a sustainable price again.
S&D will become the norm and I could never be part of that.
WARO is still actively going on down here in Canterbury. Dark 500 has been hammering the Rakaia/Wilberforce/Mt Hutt/Mt somers area taking deer, chamois, pigs, goats and now a heap of tahr - basically anything that moves. Use to come through every 6 weeks to 2 months, but has been hammering it since the opening of duckshooting, chiller truck has been up and down the road every few days. Apparently either going to high end pet food or to some Australian market.
"Can we not bring the 1080 shit into this thread? Thanks."
+1 as NI bush is 1080 deer or no deer present, period.
I can't see this thread progressing positively :ORLY: :D
I believe that James Scott supplies the same factory as Hales, not sure how much they are doing. One of his pilots got a bit defensive when I asked about shooting deer for pet food, he was adamant they weren't.
Still to find that bloody snee road, guaranteed deer there apparently
There is no way its a viable proposition now, operating costs of helicopters if not overloaded out ways any return from the carcass pay out.
So wild animal recovery is either subsidized by the tax payer ie DOC or the operators do it for fun.The deer days of the 60s and 70s are gone!!
As a pilot i was always interested in the old footage and the skills of those who survived. As a hunter, dare I say it 1080 or aerial hunting is just a wank.
The native bush will recover from any animal browsing or human destruction once we have gone. not sure if you have ever gone to a spot you hunted say ten years ago and noted how much it has overgrown.nature sorts it self out very quiclky!!
An operator in Haast that I spoke to the other day says that he's been doing it the whole way through this reported "dip" in the market, supposedly different operators supply different markets so things effect them to varying degrees
