    Wellington Hunting

    hey team.

Looks like I have secured a good career move up in Wellington. Ill be moving up there mid-July from South Canterbury.
Im really going to miss my hunting spots down here, but at the same time im really looking forward to exploring and scouting some new spots up there.

Im not a big bush hunter and really prefer the tops and tussock. Is there anything like tops hunting up North? Or is the majority bush?
Ill also miss snotting wallabies, so might have to try track down some goats to scratch that itch!

I have a decent 4wd so should be able to get most places off the beaten track.

Appreciate some direction for where I should look to get into it!

Wellington has some really good hunting as far as numbers go. The Tararua's and Ruahine's have open tops and are not too far to get to. The Remutaka's and Haurangi's are really good also but don't have the open tops the others do. I could take you out for a hunt or two and could show you plenty of places on maps that are worth a look. I'm based in South Wairarapa so not too far from Wellington.

Closest decent tops near Wellington would be the Ruahines.
Average access on the west side but the Ngamoko or Whanahuia range will get you into something familiar.
Further north the Kaweka range has some awesome open tops areas and is a beautiful bit of country.
The one positive is the hills are a lot smaller up here
"A peculiar virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter ordinarily has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct. Whatever his acts, they are dictated by his conscience, rather than by a mob of onlookers. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact " - Aldo Leopold

Check out craigc's vid that he linked recently. Although it probably didn't show the Tararua tops at their best weather conditions wise.

They do get rain and stuff in the South Island - regardless of what the tourism people say.... he's probably got a rain coat.

Oooo I hadn’t even considered the new variety of deer aspect!

Thanks for your responses team, I’ll do some digging and planning with the topo maps and start making some plans!

Once you get into the CNI high country and chase Sika nothing else will matter anyway
