Where to go and shoot my first NZ Red Stag (North Island)

    Het team,

I know that this is a contentious subject, but id like to head out somewhere on the North Island and shoot my first red Stag.

I have done heaps of goat culling and possum hunting and done a recent trip into the Southern Kaimais to try my hand at bush hunting. I am hoping someone can either take me out to knock a deer over or point me in the right direction with some tips to get a decent stag? and all help is appreciated.

    Cheers

    M

Plenty of good animals pulled out of the Pureoras.... and you've got a better chance of getting them when you get off the couch

There is a track that runs up from the carpark into a clearing in the bush, top end of the clearing you can climb up the face onto a plateau and sidle round with the wind in your face.I shot a nice Stag by a big Tree above the river there.

To get home reverse the steps in the first sentence.

If you want a 'decent' stag then you are wasting your time in the Kaimai's, I have yet to get a 'decent' stag out of the Kaimai's after hunting there for 40 years and living there for 30...been a few 4's, 6's and 8's pulled from there recently that I know of and probably a shit load I don't know about.
A real piss off is when someone asks where they should hunt and one goes to great trouble to point them in what one thinks is the right direction only to have them come back and tell you they went somewhere entirely different...bring a box of Cody's and loosen my lips.

And plenty reported on the back of Hawkes Bay farms where they apparently seen mixing with sheep! If hunters not allowed on the property, may as well cull a few with a Robbie.

What do you mean by decent stag, a 12 ? there are deer/stags pretty much everywhere, I see a ton of stags while out hunting but most are 8-10 pointers and range from total shit to average, I probably see a decent 12-14 pointer maybe three times a year.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Geez you are a machine or know some pretty special spots to see that many stags. Or I’m just a shit hunter. Probably all of the above..
