I am interested to know where and how you carry your knife while hunting. For example, is it on a belt around your waist, is it in a pocket or a day pack or do you have it reversed on your pack strap ready for quick extraction like Sly and Arnie in the movies (I have never come across anyone that does this)?
I wear mine on a belt around my waist.
Lost a few off my belt pushing through thick bush and monkey scrub, so now in my pocket or pack.

I normally carry my big one on my belt and have a fold-out buck (which gets the most use) in my pack. Also have a cheap shitter in my little med-pack/survival-pack thing which is always in my backpack.
I shoot bunnies/possums once or twice a week so I always like to have a big knife handy as if the buggers aren't dead I don't fancy shooting a 17HMR at the ground in front of me. Easier to stand & stab.
stabbing a possum? thats a new one. why not use the taranaki two step?
oh and in my day pack. unless im not carrying a daypack then on my belt
Pig hunting on my belt every time. Deer I have a mercator in my pouch/pocket and my other knife in my day pack. This caught me out last time when I grabbed the bugger by the ear and it tried to get up. Wish I had a propper size knife on my belt then. I am looking at nice carry knives to buy when I get to the states. Want something with about a 4 inch blade and a nice sheath so no chance of getting lost.
In the mean time I am going to have a crack at making a leather sheath for one of my bahco knives. I can afford to loose ten of them to every one $150 knife!!
After I lost my hunting knife at poronui mistakenly unclipped my knife belt instead of waist strap on my pack while getting ready to hop onto the back of the helisika ute, didn't realise I had dropped it on the ground until I got part way to oamaru hut I was lucky that i had my good skinning knife in my pack, so now my knives stay in my hunting bag till I have to use it so I know it ain't going to get dropped.

Why would you "stab" a possum? They'll die quicker with a swift boot on the head. Less chance of the f&*kers running up your arm too!
If they're not quite dead I stand on them, pull my knife out of its sheath and stab them in the head. What's wrong with that? Quick and painless. Been doing it to rabbits and possums since I was a kid and haven't had one get a hold of me.Quote:

A decent knife on my belt. Mostly the first thing you do with a knife is cut a throat. I like it accessable and sharp. I don't want to be grovelling around in my pack.
Also there's a mercator in my belt pack as a spare. And I've got a small one on my pack waist band too. That's 'cos when I've got my pack on my knife belt is usually in the pack.
No worries, just wondering. I grew up catching them too, run possum lines and off for a few years while I was at school/uni. Can't recall using a knife on one yet, apart from skinning them of course! Great fun shooting the old coons.Quote:

I used to use a vege knife for everything, lost it after 10 yrs and now use a folder. Those big bowie types are a joke, unless you are pig hunting.
For rabbits etc I have a small knife in a sheath that carries in my front pocket but when after anything else I have one of my other knives on my hunting belt but situated just behind my hip so that it is not likely to be grabed by any scrub I push through. In a fall it is well away from the femoral artery as I heard of a hunter once who died from a knife cut in a fall where the knife was just in front of his hip bone.
I carry more than one knife when out and about with a rifle as the pocket knife I made is ALWAYS in my pocket with either my rabbit knifeor belt knife with a second in my day pack. Always make my sheath's as the deep pouch type so the possibility of losing them is much reduced.

on my belt RH side... I had to make a new sheath for my current one as I like the point to be at the back as it catches less and its dome would unclip easy facing forward. The dome can come undone on the new one and it will still stay put as it a tight fit on the handle

just a cheap knife but it seams to hold its edge :)
If you are hunting open land then on a belt is fine. If you are hunting tight bush then leave it in your day bag along with your sling to prevent snagging branches and spooking the game you are stalking
I don't wear a belt and my main knife is a fold up jobbie and that stays in my day pack. I have never used a fixed blade knife as I've never seen the need.
Yeah, that was me until I started to notice my fingers locking up when gripping the small handle because of buggered nerves and tendons. Couple of ops later and now I use fixed blades with a bit of grip and leverage. About a 4" blade.Quote:

I use a Little Remington one with a gut hook, mostly on my belt behind my back with my range finder & ammo, unless I have a pack on then they are on my hips.
If I have a bit of a walk I stick it in my pack.
It is a little short in the blade & is "interesting" sticking pigs I have shot with it....
The fat blade & gut hook make it a little difficult to cut out the backside of small animals but I love the gut hook.
I had two off them but broke one digging bullets out of a bank in a hurry up north one day......Bugger... it was worth it though to retrieve bullets shot from 1700 yards away :cool:

Usually in my daypack so it doesn't fall off my belt when pushing through the scrub.
If I'm out with the dogs I will typically have a knife on my belt, if its just me then 50/50 if its in my bag or my belt.
Depending on the hunt weather I just have a bum bag or day pack. Bum bag its on my left hip.(why would a right hander have it on his right hip to tangle with his rifle?) day pack trip the bum bag is in the pack and there is a small folder backup in the bum bag.

If you have your knife behind your hip bone it is unlikely to interfere with a slung rilfe in my experience. A knife dosent have to be in a fast draw position on any hunting trip so a bit further 'round the back' is more comfortable but is still readily to hand when the need arrises after the shot has been taken.

in my bum bag, the less stuff hanging off me the better in my opinion.
I'm with Von Gruff, my main green river job is on ther hip with a steel as well, but further back so its not a hassle in the thick shit. I have a folder in the day bag too
On the hip slightly to the rear.( Sheath and steel ) ive had mine since about 1985 hard to find the same type of sheath's these days, if its tight i pull the bush shirt or coat over it and the scrub slides off on worries . I wear it on the left and sling the rifle on the right - just what ive got used to that way my steel dont rub mark the scope and stock . :)

Knife on belt as i carry and use a knife every working day.
On my belt/ bumbag and I normaly have a smaller knife in the bag as well. A good pouch is essential for the safty of the knife and the owner in the event of accidental slips and falls. If I'm pig hunting I carry a large jungle knife on my Pighuntimg belt along with my pig sticker. My 2 cents worth.
Damn right about that. A freak accident while thrusting a leg up to climb up a steep bank out of a small creek saw a blade disappear six inches into and straight back out of my thigh several years ago. Was a good clean wound and thankfully had missed the femoral so did a quick patch job with the first aid kit and then hard slogged a compass bearing for two hours to get out to the car and then drove five hours back to Auckland to go to the A&E (ten stitches). Stuffed up an otherwise good weekend in the bush and as I severed a nerve I haven't been able to feel my left knee ever since.Quote:
