Thread: Winter Habbits

Hi guys,
I have read a lot on what deer are doing during the roar/rut and during spring and summer, but havent found many articles about what they do over the winter months... Are they much less active than in the warmer months? Any insights would be appreciated...

Read up on this subject and talk to as many Hunters as you can

Hunting in winter can be very productive IMO.

Deer seek out the sunny/warmer spots on cold/frosty days.

This narrows down the likely areas where you will find them browsing and sunbathing.

Northern facing sunny areas below the snow line are good places to start looking especially early mornings after a cold frosty night.

I like hunting in winter and seem to do better this time of year than over the summer.
Cold frosty mornings are an awesome time to catch the deer out browsing on the edges of a sunny slip face.

The down side to this is most often you find yourself sitting in the cold/frosty shadows looking back into the sunny warm spots waiting for the light to improve or the deer to appear so I dress up warm and take a thermos of hot tea.

River crossings pretty much suck in winter too so I try not to get my feet wet if I can help it.

I also find hunting in winter productive, where I hunt there seems to be a remarkable drop in hunter numbers over the winter months which I believe allows the deer to move around with a little less caution.

Have attained and am reading through "stalking the seasons through" great book, (thanks Moonhunt) and will try get hold of Red Deer in NZ soon as. Was up your way this weekend in fact, (quick trip to see partner's family in Whangarei and Russell, nice and warm up there!).

Richie if you cant find it in Ch CH Library or no one down there has a copy to lend PM me and I'll post mine down? (Red Deer in NZ) I got mine for about $40 and read it off and on to refresh my fading mind when something that has happened needs to be re enforced.

Am reading another good book at the moment that i found at the markets for $6.00, Graeme Marshall Hunter. Just some of his experiences over the last 40 or so years, interesting stuff. Makes me wish i was around in the sixties...

That makes about 50 thousand of us

hunting in the winter is higly underated.Theres fewer hunters around and the once you get into the zone (were they are holed up) youll score them easy as pie.Read all you can richie but my advice to you from another learner.......read those books after you have got back from a hunt so you can relate some experiances and confirm what you have just been doing if that makes sense.Good luck mate .

Makes perfect sense, cheers Neck, went for a walk on saturday but got passed by 4 pig dogs and 2 lads near the top of the hill, they got onto a pig and if there were any animals in the vicinity would have run a mile with the racket. book had arrived when i got back so had a good read up. so far no tips on sending pig dogs down hill tho...
