Got block 5 coming up, I hear there is a new cutover on the NW side, doesn't show on google. Plus another decent bit of cutover NE corner. Sounds like there are a few about from others who have had blocks. Anyone been in there in the last couple of months?

Thanks, do you mean in the cutover or in amongst the pines? I've heard there is a decent cutover running parallel to the beach, NW corner of the block, and that first and last light the deer tend to be crossing the cutovers heading for the dunes in the morning and back the other way evening. Taking my son as an observer/photographer, looking forward to it.
I’ve had about 4 of those blocks.
I always just walk straight to downwind end and start making my way slowly back from there.
Only time I didn’t have success was when I didn’t do that. Overthought it and tried to just hunt so called hotspots.
They’re pretty easy deer to hunt, o lime staking them in bush during day. I just go slowly and when I spook a mob I give a little hind call. They always stop.
And there’s loads of them. Saw about 40 in block 6 last year.
Had block 3 on the 15th. Saw 10. 9 were on block 5

They have a very fine grained meat quite different from red deer (which I farmed on the property). Sika back steaks would be much appreciated.

Yep have been on it. As others have said go to the downwind end and hunt back up. I had a doe permit so I didn’t shoot anything for fear of getting pinged if it was a small spoiler, mate had the buck permit. There’s a wee native gut that comes off the farmland at the bottom end of the block that’s well worth a look. Deer will cross from the farmland first thing.Quote:

Advice from the patrol guys that they reckon applies to most or all blocks was, that in the morning the deer tend to go from the farm side to the coast side, and hang out in the tight cover amongst the dunes. In the evening they go back the other way. Also that the decent bucks only move at very first and last light. So figure out the wind, be in place before shooting light, and be there again until last light. There are usually yearlings spread around the cutover as well, and as several have said on here, in amongst the gullies and ridges where there is heaps of cover in amongst the pines as well. The ones we saw did not appear to be travelling either way, but were hanging out in the cutover near cover. But it was a full moon early evening, so maybe the deer were not moving as late or early as usual.
The trick is trying to work out where the new cutover is, as Google earth seems to be 3 or 4 months behind, and using blk 5 as an example thats about 100ha+ of new cutover.
