Kiwijames, you got the number for that clinic?
I am a knife, torch, raincoat and compass on a string round my neck sort of guy....don't even own a rifle with a scope on it. All my hunting gear is wool.
It all works for me. Being out in the bush is about keeping things simple.
map and compass mainly I am going to get a PLB when I can and a GPS
Im old school, although I own a GPS and a kimber
Both, it depends on the trip an what have you
PLB, Rangefinder, Radios (if im not on my own). That's about it though. Probably get a GPS at some stage.
Being a new age hunter I'm naturally into utilising gadgets but i learn't how to use a map with grid ref's and how to use a compass at school. I take a GPS and with it is attached a folded up version of the mapped area im hunting in a waterproof bag, attached to that is my compass.. in other words covering all bases.
I also bring a camera and range finder in, I get alot of pleasure out of shooting photos as opposed to using the rifle and you can capture some amazing photo's to share with freinds and family.
I took my boy out to feed my duck pond yesterday. He played psp the whole way and commented when he got back "dad, I didn't really notice anything".
When I first started out didn't know any better & used a 223, factory ammo & 4x scope for everything that walked. I kinda miss those simple days as now I find myself sitting on a hilltop with some mega clear optics, wind meter, rangefinder, ballistics chart on Iphone, Specialised Long range rifle topped with Nightforce & painstackingly crafted handloads to go whack an animal at some ungodly distance just to have to then walk half a day to go get it! I've now added a little Kimber 308 to my arsenal so I can do some get back to basics hunting - if you cant see it with the naked eye yourl just have to stalk closer :P
Does iPhone GPS work without cell signal? I thought they only use assisted gps, not a real receiver?
But then again, my wife is the techno junkie, IT wizard, I normally inherit the previous model, couple years after the fact ;)
PLB (aka solo tramping passport), compass & maps
