Im thinking a 6.5x284 or something along those lines. lightweight as possible while being able to shoot out to 1000yds max is the idea

6.5/284s seem to constantly dissapoint. They really need 26+ inch barrel to get some boogy out of them. Have a look at the 6.5 saum or wsm they
I take it your keen for 6.5mm plenty of sensible good performing 7mms too.

Im not as experienced as alot of guys on here. But ive read alot and spent a fair bit of time behind my guns only out to 600 so far but my personal thaughts are big 338 or bigger are if you intend to shoot past 1000. You dont need to burn 100s of grains of powder of throw 300 grain pills to have good ballistics and terminal performance out to 1000 . The big boys excel at long range but dont float my boat. And arent practical for me.

Carry them with bipod in your pack... run the sling off cable ties loosely run round barrel to get centre of gravity further down on the sling... get lighter scopes for them.... get lighter stocks...

Mine has a 30" BBL too and brake... its a dream to carry now ive found the ways!! I still would rather not drag it through the scrub but at 9lb its sweet to carry now... makes a difference from the 12lb prick of a thing it was with a heavy scope and bipod..

In a perfect world we would all be able to take 7mm rem mags out and cleanly kill deer out to 1000 yards in gusty winds but this just isn't the case with most of us. That's where a .338 comes in as wind will have less effect and your clean kill radius becomes that little bit larger. I feel I am at the stage where I can let animals that are just a little too far away live for another day so that is why I am looking at moving onto something a bit smaller and lighter. As far as i am concerned there is no such thing as overkill though.

That was kinda my point. If you can learn to do it with a 7mm to 1000 then a 338 past that point is just going through tue motion
