I think it's the calibre, people around here seem to be a bit funny about .270, even in Kimber, not sure why.

It's a man's gun, that rules a big percentage out.

I have asked quite a few times in different threads as to why people dismiss .270 on here after seeing negative comments about the cartridge, but nobody has straight out said why they dislike it.

I own a .308 and have no affiliation with the .270, would just like to know why so many people dismiss .270 ?

I'm no expert but its rise had to do a lot with an American Gun writer Jack O'Connor who basically characterized it as a magnum without it actually being one- great for pretty much everything in America, including mountain hunting for those big sheep they have there. Over here it was popularized quite a bit by Graham Henry in his regular Rod & Rifle column back in the day as a great caliber for our open country.

I suspect that it's current demise is due to a couple of factors:
    1. Rifles chambered in .270 being sold with barrels that are too short. This severely limits its speed and makes it terrible on the ears/brain due to muzzle flash/concussion.
    2. Projectile availability. With the rise of people "rolling their own" there has been an abundance of 6.5 and 7mm longrange projectiles around, but not many for the .270 as there were only two chamberings in this diameter. .270 WSM never really caught on as the action sizes that most companies were selling them in prevented you from seating the bullets out properly.
    3. Barrel replacement- you will struggle to find off the shelf barrels in .270 dia for your custom build. Most demand is for those other dias.

Either way its a fantastic chambering like in this rifle above. If people can't see why this rifle is awesome then I'm not complaining- less competition for great guns!

The negativity about .270 (and 7-08) is mainly bullshit. Good hearted bullshit (apart from those who simply know shit all and hop on the band wagon). But bullshit none the less.

And modern powders have given the .270 new legs.
