@Hunty1 How far are you wanting to shoot?
Inside 450m (500yd) there is no need to go to the expense of a 284. Heck even the 140Gr Sierra HP-Gameking (which is pretty much the lowest BC 7mm bullet in 140gr) gets to 375m/410yd with 1000ft/lbs of energy, when launched at 2750FPS from a 20" barrel. But numbers are only that "numbers" the 140gr HP-gameking is one of the best killing bullets I have used in the 7mm08 along with the 145gr Speer hotcore and it is also very accurate in my rifle which is the most important thing to me.
Like I said in the other thread I am currently shooting the 150 eld-x in factory ammo because I brought a packet to compare to my handloads which were pretty average, when these run out I'm will be going back to either the Speers or Sierra's as i don't really need a high BC bullet.
BC doesn't matter, until you need to dial

@winna you are completely right! My rational currently is to streamline the rifle collection. I have a 16" 308 that has enough oomph to reach out to 400yrds or so (essentially the same as a 20" 7mm08) This rifle is a dream to carry in the bush and shoot. I also have a 24" 280rem that can reach out further with the 162 ELD-X at 2835fps. The 280 is pretty cumbersome with the 24" tube and a suppressor. A 20" 284 would hopefully not be too dissimilar in ballistics to the 280 but in a more compact package. I know i could hot rod the 7mm08 as suggested by @superdriver but I prefer to not be working my rifles too hard. Powder capacity is king!

In terms of hunting I'm a believer that a quicker heavier pill is always going to be an advantage at longer range (+400yrds) as accuracy is seldom as good as at closer ranges. A bigger, faster pill gives you a bit of leeway if the shot isn't perfect.

Plus I really enjoy playing with loads and general rifle tinkering!

@Forestry I ended up playing with RL17 and 162gr ELD-Ms in the 7mm08... doing 2630fps and shooting consistently like this....

Figured probably wasn't worth the hassle for a couple of hundred extra fps.

That said I haven't shot anything other than paper with it, always grab the 16" 308 when going hunting. Such a great wee rifle.

That is epic, the 162s in 708s are great killers. Give them a go on game at some point. Probably wouldn't be shooting a big stag in the point of the shoulder but will smash anything you want to shoot

They are indeed. I'm loading for a Blaser barrel so have a longer throat allowing me a 2.924 OAL
I'm running a 150gr NBT pill for close quarters (inside 400yds) and the 162gr ELD-m for Tahr or long range deer.

I have been shooting the 162gr Amax at the same speed in my rifle for 5+ years. Still have approx 1000 left to, so don't worry.

I've shot a lot of animals and everything dies extremely quickly, near or far! If I do my part, it's game over.
