    50-70hp outboard

Looking at repowering the boat as it's just had a full strip down and new gel coat plus new transom so now is as good a time as any before we go bowling holes through the transom to suit the old 85. Boat is only ever used for a bit of fishing and exploring the sounds or Abel Tasman etc with only myself and the mrs so it's grossly overpowered as is. Hoping to save a bit on fuel, cut down the weight on the transom so she sits flatter at rest etc. looking at all options at the moment but don't really want to spend a whole heap, maybe 5k tops. Cheers

Keep an eye on trademe there is often good deals on there for used motors especially 2strokes as others repower with new fours.
Id be looking for the top power range in a block depending on brand most 40-50-60 hp are the same motor and weight then they jump up 70-90 etc are heavyer.

Yeap cheers mate, I have been out with a mate in his boat, exact same as mine but with a 50 on the back and even though it wasn't as quick it was set up well and got up on the plane nicely with two of us onboard and gear for a day, was just a more pleasant boat to handle all round and sat a lot nicer at rest, mine has water coming over into the well with even the slightest roll on

    Yea not ideal ay.
Mine was quite bum heavy and shifting the fuel load forad has helped.
I would like a 60 on mine the 40 is working too hard.
A new fourstroke 60 would only add about 3kg over my Johnson 40!
unlikely to ever happen at 12k but like you I may repower with a good secondhand one day.

Even a more modern motor around the same size may sort it, I haven't weighed it but the old Chrysler is a heavy old bitch, steel engine block and all!

Yea thats where id be looking if in your shoes, fourstrokes do not have the torque and punch out of the hole that twostrokes do for the same horsepower and the 50 fourbangers may struggle.

What year is the current engine and how fast does it go flatstick?

Not sure on exact year mate but I would hazard a guess at late 70s, it jumps onto the plane really quick and on gps have had it doing 64kmh across a glass lake, which feels just fast enough for the old girl! It will sit on the plane at 1/3 throttle. It runs really well but it is getting long in the tooth and I am waiting for the day the bottom end lets go or something else major, was good pulling us kids around on skis and biscuits but I just want to do a bit of fishing and cruising around these days.
