Thread: 577 Snider dies, brass, molds etc

I have alot of experiance trying to get Snider's to shoot. I have had 3 or four of them.

Rebarreled two with new old stock barrels that were still in the white, i must have half a dozen different molds, solid turned brass cases that only hold 60 grns. I bored out an action so I could set the barrel up against the breach face, shot them without barrel bands and just a leather bootlace
holding the barrel into the channel along with the tang screw.

Its best to enjoy them for what they are.

Ah the joys of being retired ( supposedly ) is multiple days per week too do stupid shit in the workshop

Here are some bullets

.577 Mine
CBE Giant Bumble Bee
CBE Wadcutter
Lee .600 Round ball

I have another couple of molds but they throw bullets that similar to the CBE designs replecate the ballistics of a round ball.

I have the Minie like your top one
A Lee improved minie 475 grain. A bit like a wad cutter with multiple grease grooves and a cone hollow base
And a Lee REAL 440 grain muzzleloader one

I could easily make a different base plug for the standard minie Mold i have and turn out heavier solid base bullets seems this is for a cartridge rifle and a modern new barrel

This is just a quick fun project and then I can look for a decent 12 gauge SxS to build a double 577 on

I think your idea of a base plug for the Miné is a winner.

I would think about drilling a hollow point in them as well.I wouldn't be supprised if your new barrel shoots harder bullets best.

(Pure speculation but its based on seeing modern barrels do that).

Yes flat base and hollow point is the plan

Because the barrels can be as fat as 1:25" I'm keen to flat base and get the standard minie up to nearer 600 grains and stabilise correctly
The one button can do from 1:25 to 1:48 and was conceived for being able to do the full range from 577 Nitro Express to old school slow twist snider re barrels and a proper hunting muzzleloader

I shot that minie exact very successfully in my PHs and in my Hollis Snider Cavalry Carbine.
The Lee always cast up better than my "correct" Lyman mould. Less preheating time by far.

At a NZ National shoot in Waiouru long long ago they questioned my use of the Lee. They partly picked up on it due to the beautiful holes in my target. Wasn't seen to be in the spirit of things. They let it go and I went on to win the Military shoot. It was a replica rifles Military shoot, not originals. I doubt anyone was using a correct original minie.

At another national BP shoot (Rod Rifle and Gun Club) I had another shooter complain about my sling on my Naval Rifle. I used it for hunting and it had a seat belt type webbing sling on it. I wasn't using it as a shooting aid. At any rate I had to remove it. The RO was apologetic though.
At the same shoot I had another complaint, possible the same shooter, that I was receiving assistance with my reloading. I had been squaded on the very left position and struggled to have my gear set up due to lack of room at my position so I handed my ramrod back to my wife whilst I fired. That was deemed to be assisted reloading. Again the RO was very apologetic but he still enforced the complaint.

I never attended another National BP shoot.

Out the workshop door to the 100m targets and a gong
That's why I'm not into shooting clubs etc
They are very intolerant of guys who show up with something different

I hope you are building that .577 Double for some one else, I thought you were doing a .375Ex 2 1/2in ?

Im guessing you going to sort of replicate what sixty ten did with the 45/70 barrel???...oh boy oh boy that will be a fun rifle when finished...
