    Basic hunting rifle - Canterbury

Looking for a very basic hunting rifle to get out shooting with. Appearances are irrelevant, and I'm fine with doing some work on it - just needs a good sharp bore and minimal throat/crown erosion. As long as it's accurate that's all I care about.

Open on caliber - prefer cals 308 and those related, but if you've got something else I'm happy to hear.

Prefer purchasing locally in Christchurch - Canterbury area.

Ideally, $300 or so. I'm thinking of something single shot, bolt action, damaged stock, no finish kind of gun that I can modify to what I want and not worry about. Frankly an enfield would work except it's hard to find a sporter with a really decent bore compared to a cheap modern gun that someone has broken the stock on or something similar.

Appreciate the offer but I'm looking for a slightly larger cartridge.

If I could modify the original post it would be to say looking for a project gun - I don't expect it to be perfect, just need a good bore to work with.

There's a savage 7mm-08 super tidy just come up on the buy sell. Little over your budget but worth a look.

My advice save up a little more
500 would get you alot more options than 300
No point in owning something that goes bang and that’s about it it’s actually got to be able to hit stuff
300 isn’t gonna get you much worth having
And if you are wanting something scoped even less so
5-600 will open up your options and trust me these days 5-600 is a very cheap rifle

Fair enough - I'm out of touch with prices here and still experiencing some sticker shock on some guns, so may very well have to adjust my expectations. I'm looking for something that would be a bush bashing loaner gun in the future, so an iron sighted plain jane gun is fine with me.

Funnily enough haven't even been through the doors at gun city. Drive past it for work daily but never outside of my work hours and inside theirs
Should probably change that. Appreciate the heads up!
