Thread: BSA "Hunter 222" Bubba special

So recently I bought a BSA "Hunter" or mini actioned rifle in 6.5 Gendel - I wanted the CZ527 magazine thayt had been fitted to it.

I got the magazine and it was indeed a "bubba job" but it was usable.

Now the rifle has arrived and OMG - it'd dammed near make you cry.

It is indeed one of the true "Hunter" action and is so stamped, along with "222 Rem". The action face and extractor have been modified to suit 6.5 Grendel and the floor plate welded closed with a slot cut in it for a magazine (follower, spring and box are gone). Bolt knob has been altered. Trigger attachment tab has been repaired with a wee weld. Stock has been hacked about and the barrel channel bedded. Safety doesnt work.

So what does it have in its favour - a tidy action with unmodified feed rails. A functional bolt and trigger. A tidy 6.5 barrel.

Sold strictly "as is where is" with no warranty!

How about $400.







The rifle is functional but I'd be having it checked by a competent gunsmith familar with BSA's before I fired it

Does it say what sort of barrel it is and what condition is the rifling in

I meant to mention that I discussed this rifle with GaryP and he mentioned that the floor plate from a longer action BSA could be adapted, and he has one. Got me thinking that maybe the box, follower and spring from something like a Rem 700 might be able to rescue it.

Nope, no details on the barrel and its not even stamped with the chambering - very bad practise!

So no idea if the rifling is good or not?

The inside of the barrel does look pretty good, bright bore with no rust or pitting. Good in the throat. My guess is a used barrel in good condition was fitted. No reason for it not to shoot well.

I'll put my Hunter and Howa mini and M700 side by side for a comparison if you like?

Just the magazine followers would be the most informative I think.

The bubba who attacked this rifle was a moron as well as a bubba (and I say this as I can bubba rifles with the bedt of them).

If the person (and their gunsmith) had done a little homework they would have found that its 99% the follower that determines feeding in a "mauser" style feed system. A x39 type double stack follower in the original mag box might well have been ok.

Howa mini is really close for hole spacing. Pic doesn't give a good perspective.

I built a 7.62x39 on one of these many years back, and for what it’s worth, a single stack mag is the way to go to make these feed well. They had the right idea, badly executed. I’m almost tempted, as I’m making a stock for one as we speak, but alas, have enough projects already.

And yes, a long action BSA can be shortened to work (did one recently) You will have to make up a new mag spring retainer for the plate though.

piece of cake to make it single shot/block magazine off.....the wee 6.5grendal would be pleasant enough round for plinking or young person,indeed for big/not so young person if range kept down..... ALMOST tempted but simply dont need another smokepole.... @Wingman would be able to make something functional from this,almost tempting to bring it back to semi origonal.....

What is the barrel contour and length, looks heavy.
