Searching Dutch Oven does not bring the results I had thought- good to see staying above the line.

They have them at mitre 10 mega. Not that cheap for a new one. Check out every 2nd hand & antique store you can find.

I bought my new one from Mitre10 Mega, searched for ages in the second hand shops but had to give in and buy new in the end.

The Clearance Shed in Hastings has them too.

    Cheers

Cooked a venison stew over the open fire with it on Saturday night.
It was just big enough for:
    2.5kg prime venison
    1x large onion
    2tbl hot curry powder
    heaped tsp smoked paprika
salt, pepper and a good shaking of Italian herbs
1 1/2 cups of honey meed
2 hours over the open fire

Fed three of us for dinner and breakfast the next morning

I know the cast iron is better for you but friend has an aluminium one and loves it, no rust and light enough to take on more trips.

Never saw the point of the heavy things till a was at a hut one night with someone who knew their way round one, bread, roast, scones you name it this fellow could pump it out wih his camp oven

Might not work that well as an oven. If you put the coals/embers on top you might melt the lid. Heating from underneath should be OK as the heat can be conducted through to the food.
A friend melted one of the old army aluminium dixies by heating over a gas cooker with nothing in it. He had draped his socks over the top and was trying to dry his socks.

I was thinking what comes out and into your food......if that's a risk?
