    Cheap Binos

My wee sister has started to do a bit of hunting so I told her I would ask in here to see if anyone has a pair of 10x42 or 8x42 binos for a couple hundred dollars? Shes got her sights set on some ELs eventually but needs something to tie her over untill funds allow

Bresser hunter 8*40 justice a quick play and focus works fine, no scratches on lenses, found all the lens caps could do with a good clean though

I've got a cheap set about to go on the yellowsite - Praktica Sport 10-30x25, be decent for a newbie, but smaller than you're after.
BAK 4 Prisms, Anti-UV blah blah blah... after $30+postage
Super impressive for what they are.

Porro binos, even the cheapest ones, are brighter for any given magnification x objective diameter combination, because the porro prisms have less transmission loss. The "straight" fashionable roof prism binos need expensive silver coatings on the side of the prism to cut down on loss, so you pay more for a brightness performance you can get on the cheap from porro prism binoculars.

Weight penalty is a bit more for porro binos, but most weight penalty is by going for high magnification like 10x, which requires thicker heavier lenses throughout the binoculars.

If I was buying her some porros, i'd go for 6x30 waterproof Kowa porro binoculars. Just over 400grams and individually focused eyepieces for extra waterproof reliability. Fishpond link, but can be gotten cheaper.
    Bad choices kill.

Give him 48 hrs, a real nice pair of 8x40s, hard to improve on once she's got them round her neck.

The combined eyepiece protectors sliding on the strap are very handy btw, don't see them round much, but they allow you to carry binos round your neck in the rain, just lift them up and as you level them the eyepiece cover swings down, no fiddling with individual caps.
