    Clay Load Steel Shot

    Good morning,

Taking a landowners young fella out for Opening morning, we're moving him up to a 12 gauge as he's quite a big lad now and way too big for the single shot .410 he was using.

Would anyone have a box of No. 7 steel shot clay load? He's going to be on a small pond so it'll be fine for killing power. I've got one box already.

Pick up round Welly area would be ideal.

    Cheers

I stand to be corrected but i thought steel clay ammo was the domain of yanks (who also allow up to 32gm loads ) .NZCTU Im given to understand allow max 28gm lead only.
anyhow try contacting GUN City as they may have some in stock at a pinch.

Steel clay ammo is very much a thing in nz, falcon do a load and I other brands get imported, waiarapa gun club had to use it as part of their operating conditions.

Kotuku, my understanding is the NZCTA allows clubs at their discretion to use steel or lead but not both. National Champs are lead only as are schoolboy comps. It's confusing enough just trying to hit the things.

If anyone is heading down to Wellington via the Waikato by Friday and can connect up with you, I can offer a couple of boxes of 24gr steel for the young fella to use.

Top man, thank you for the offer, I'll be heading up to Rangitikei tomorrow night so probably wouldn't work out. I see Gamebore do a 30 gram load, has very low brass so guessing it's not overly grunty, may be an easier option.

    Cheers gqhoon

we tried some...wasnt impressed......kent and winchester both make good killing loads at 30grms...so does falcon come to think of it....young fella will kill way more ducks using that and you WILL BE ABLE to eat them.......shoot bird with steel 7s-8s and it will be a throw away proposition, like dropping your apple in sand. the above loads in size 3-4 would be perfect, its what we used for our son when he did same....did season with 7/8th oz and 1 oz reloads but he chewed through them then pinched the 30grm loads to use happily.
and a fella is never too big for a single barrel .410

Cheers for the advice Mickey Duck, I’ve found some 30 gram loads to use.

Wasn’t knocking the calibre, more that the gun is a tiny little youth style. Not a great fit for him.
