    Crampons

    I'm after a pair of crampons possibly an ice axe. Cheers

    Price range? 10pt 12pt or chains? Climbing axe or self arrest axe? Gearshop.co.nz have good deals on, i run 12pt G12 NewMatic crampons and a grivel nepal Self arrest axe. All bought from them. Was 450$ TYD

    If you've done a course and know how to use them, that's fine. There's technique and by the time you learn it you'll know what to ask for.
    If you're starting out, it would be best to go to a shop and get some fitted for your boots. I'd get an ice axe before crampons myself.

    +1 on a course

    I did one of the Alpine Club Snowcraft courses this year and discovered you would be better off with an ice axe before crampons...

    For the type of stuff I encounter in winter tramping, better off with micro spikes and axe. Use the micro spikes on steep muddy terrain already.

    Another option if you're not going heavy duty ice treking is a set of spikes that strap onto the instep for walking on peeled logs
