What region? Won't be worth shipping weights from out of the region and technique varies depends on area

Go try the scrap metal guys, they normally put dive weights aside when they come in, get a pocket weight belt, far better.

On diving stuff, who's best to go see if I want to get a set of dive gear?

Based in Hamilton but happy to travel if it's worth it.

I wouldn't part with my weight belt but I have a couple sets of reg's and BCD's. Would all need to be checked out but sure they still work like they should.

I'd find someone who knows their stuff and get them to give you a little "taste test" in a very controlled environment. Diving isn't for everyone. And I've seen some guys go through the buy gear, do the course and head for the sea scenario and then decide they don't like it.
I wouldn't buy a second hand BCD or regulator. The bottom of the sea is a horrible place when something stops working. @Proudkiwi I've been dealing with the guys at Get Wet by the TeRapa racecourse. Haven't compared their prices, but they provide good service.
I was dealing with another crew who have now shut up shop, who's service was dangerous. Got my reg and BCD serviced and my reg shit itself on the first dive. All the joins they had undone were done up finger tight. They got a very animated visit from me.
