Since the .270 is so unfashionable at the moment he can probably get a very good set up for $1500. Then, when he realises that a 150gn .277 projectile launched at 2900fps is totally useless at killing things at reasonable distances he can trade it on something like a 260 that shoots a 140gn projectile slower.
If the health and safety voice inside his head doesn't like the idea of the big bang he could take a leaf out of the muzzle brake users book and carry earplugs in the field. Much cheaper than a suppressor.

A suppressor is much cheaper than hearing aids!

    Yeah. True.
My mum is 97 and her hearing is shit. Funny thing though, she has never fired an unsuppressed rifle in her life. Or listened to loud music or used a chainsaw without hearing protection. Hearing loss is something that happens with age.
Now I am not advocating not using hearing protection, and by all means look after your hearing, but firing the odd shot from a large centrefire (with a 24" barrel) isn't going to instantly make you deaf. The cumulative effect of something like constant industrial noise is more damaging over time.
I am left handed and used an unsurpressed rifle for years and my hearing is equally bad in both ears. If my hearing had been damaged from rifle usage my right ear should be worse than my left (facing the muzzle). I will always use ear protection when I can but I don't bother for one off shots at game with a long barrel rifle.

    Haha.
No. Sorry @Gibo. Just in one of those moods.
Not meaning to belittle the 260 (great cartridge), it was just the first one that came to mind that was just a good at killing stuff as the 270win. Could have mentioned any one of dozens.

Sorry to troll off your post Gibo (you looking much better too)

I was asked last night for someone in Marlborough (maybe Tasman) who would take 2 tourists out for a Guided Hunt
If anyone here can come to the rescue in next day or so PM me ASAP
You will be paid - not sure how much

You would need to be assured of a kill though

You can pick up a new Howa suppressed with a scope for that money, or if you prefer a mauser action I have a Zastava in 270 here that we could suppress and sell $1100 leaving you $400 for a scope.

A second hand set up would probably be a better solution. Calibres around 30/06 308, 6.5x55 etc will be easy to feed too. You mentioned he has done pistol etc but no mention of handloading. If you is OK handloading some of the more exotic calibres mentioned earlier could be an option, but if he is buying factor ammo, I would suggest sticking to more common calibres for ease of supply of ammo.
