There’s 3 different plans you can sign up to, look on the Garmin website.

Yep I have the $20 a month plan, was going to do the one you can stop and start again but thought it’s easier just to do the monthly. I only use mine for communication as we didn’t get picked up by a chopper last year and had no cell coverage. Works really well and keeps the wife happy knowing I can message her.

That's my thoughts...PLB due to run out in 12 to 18 mths so contemplating options

Hi Hamish, Ive had the inreach mini for 3-4 years. Awesome units for coms, texting, pick up points for pilots etc, tracking and the like. Cost has increased though. I run the cheapest freedom plan - Its now $25/month Plus an annual $64 fee, plus you only get 10 texts/month free and then pay per text, similar with tracking points. You can stop/start the plan when you want though so I typically only run it several months of the year when in fiordland, Sth westland etc. Try and upload plan details for your,

I have the Freedom plan - Safety plan - you can start/stop as previous.

Safety Plan Details ($25/month)
Unlimited SOS
10 text messages/month
Unlimited Preset messages (predefined messages set up on the website)
Tracking points: $0.18 NZD for each point
Overages are $0.85 NZD for each text message over the 10 messages allowed in the monthly plan period.
Text messages include free-form sent messages and received messages.
Tracking points refer to the individual "breadcrumbs" sent by the inReach at user-selected intervals ranging from 10 minutes to 4 hours.

40 text messages/month

Freedom Plan Commitment.
One month commitment on any plan upgrade before a downgrade can occur. Current monthly plan selection will automatically renew for the next month unless the customer schedules a change before the plan renewal date. No fees to upgrade or downgrade plans. Suspended devices are charged $0 USD/month. A $64.00 NZD annual fee is charged on the anniversary of initial activation into Freedom plans.

As previous, main difference between annual and freedom start/stop is:
annual - less $/month, no annual fee
Freedom - can start/stop - minimum $25/month but plus annual $64 fee also.

I got my Mini 2 a couple of weeks ago, I went with the $59/month option because I figured I would be playing around a bit initially, but will change to the $25 option later.

If you are smart with your preset messages then you can probably get away with the cheap plan. Be aware that receiving a message counts as 1 message off your allowance.
