Why don't you try using your phone? Download nztopo and you are good to go.

    +1

Sounds like a flaky option, but has worked well for me so far.

Maybe just buy a spare smart phone with rubber armour and screen protector. Your $3-400 will get you more along that route than if you spend it on a dedicated GPS unit. I mean, who carries a camera nowadays?

I use the ViewRanger app on my phone, itís awesome. I was specifical at first, but it has never not found satellite. Put your phone on airplane mode and it still works, as it uses GPS rather than cell coverage, so your battery lasts ages. ViewRanger also mirrors into my Apple Watch so donít need to keep pulling phone out of my pocket. The app is free, and the topo maps are fairly cheap. Can record routes and waypoints too.

    Hi,
I have a Magellan SporTrak (older model) which shows the location and tracks etc you are walking but does not support a map I think.
you can have for $85 tyd. (see pictures)
Has a tiny hair crack on back and front (not even visible on pictures)

No way in hell I'd completely trust a dedicated GPS, yet alone a phone (which will be less immune to rough handling - even with a decent case). The map and compass have got me out of many situations in the bush when my Garmin 64st decided to lag and give me false readings. Depending on where you're going, relying solely on an electronic gadget can be suicide.

I think it's better to carry multiple options; that way if one goes kaput, you've got a Plan B. All-in-one devices are great for the sake of convenience, but navigation isn't about convenience. It's about getting back home in one piece.

    Order of priority:

    1) Laminated map + Compass (plus spare compass)
    2) PLB
    3) GPS
    4) Phone with topo maps

I should clarify. In addition to phone with downloaded maps, I always carry a PLB, even on farm trips. Doesn't matter if you're 2 or 20km away from help with a bad injury. If you've got no phone reception, it could a cold night at best. I also carry a compass and I'm aiming to get a backup device (either handheld GPS or second phone) for proper trips in to the bush. Hadn't thought about a spare compass, might do that.
