On the hunt for a deer rifle

Similar to another post a few days ago. Looking for my first real deer rifle. Would love to stay around $1000 for a rifle + scope package ideally but could consider going up to $1200 for a complete steal.

Ideally chambered in 243, but will consider others as well.
As it'll be my first centrefire and I'm around 6ft, 85kg, I don't know how big of a calibre is too big. Not interested in 270 though as I have been warned off them due to their ability to create a flinch in new shooters.

    Thanks
    SB.

Check out reloaders website, they have Ruger Americans in 243 new for $699 and a Bushnell 3-9 scope for $399. Other shops like Hunting and Fishing have some good combo deals at times. Just pays to have a look around.

Or maybe a good deal will be offered by someone on here.

Any make or model you are after?

are there seriously people who would pay $399 for a bushnell?
for the extra $40 go for a VX1 leupold.

I have a Mark 2 Ruger, Stainless, Synthetic for sale in 7/08. Barrel shortened to approx 18 inches, threaded for supp (suppressor not included), trigger lightened, bedded, free floated. Its a real good shooter and has dropped lots of deers, super reliable and dependable. Looking for around $900ish?
    Could email pics if interested?

I just looked at scopes and that one was the first I saw.
Or the other way is pay $450ish and get a Weaver or a leupold as said.

The choices are endless really. Depends on how deep the pockets are

This is a good set up! I would consider this a good buy.
    I had this exact rifle.
Offer him $800 and he'll take it...
This calibre is versatile and is a great first, last and in the middle calibre.

Does sound a very good buy.

Other wise look on trademe, there are a million barely used Tikkas on there that go pretty cheap.
Otherwise look at Savages, Remingtons and Rugers.

I'd be more likely to go for one of these packages: http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunt...-773767559.htm

Or this one, think the seller is a forum member: http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunt...-772912401.htm

I like the 6.5, a very reliable calibre. Has enough knock down power for deer and all so a lite recoil. Usually very affordable second hand. Bonus makes an entry level for target shooting, bad fault would be the bolt, doesn't lock down and springs open.
