223 would be a great idea, because he can smoke a few hares & rabbits at distance and gain some confidence, ammo is relatively cheap and its quiet. Chucking him onto a 308 etc will limit that opportunity to shoot it more freely. Don't over gun him yet!

I would go with the .223 when my son was starting out he went from .22 to a .223 which was a great choice as they need to shoot it a lot and they are cheap to run.
Get him onto a farm and set up Mike bottles fill with water at different distances and just get him to shoot it heaps.
There is plenty of time to go up to the bigger guns.
That's just what I have found with my kids who have all been through it.

there is a 243 midlands for sale on here throw a scope and a dpt suppressor on it.any reasonable 2 x 7 scope and it would owe you not much over your budget and would give him a margin of power over a 223.saying that all my deer have been shot with a 223 ( not many ) but only a large red stag made me feel a bit under gunned.if want to go 223 look at a package on a howa mini action or in 6.5 Grendel bit more exspensive for ammo but similar to 243 in performance.

Thank you for all who took time comment - very helpful especially since I have not got a lot of experience with this. Sounds like a 223 should fit the bill well and do everything he needs right now. Cheers

12 year old daughter uses a suppressed 243 and doesn't find recoil to much

I can only see one solution @Pete_D you need to buy a 223 and a bigger caliber gun for yourself that the lad can also use if and when needed.

I do alot of CF shooting with various rifles, and it is actually quite nice using the 223 for practice and trigger time.

I have a nice model 7 223 that's superseded, unbelievably accurate. Recoil is almost nil.

A 243 that's suppressed running lighter bullets wont have much recoil either tho, and will definitely be more versatile.

A rifle with reasonable waight behind it and a can is as good as a 223 recoil wise but just gives way more shot options on game
Wouldn’t want to try and shoot a red deer though a shoulder blade with a 223
Sure with good shot placement behind the shoulder it’s probably capable but thats a way smaller target than the hole shoulder
7-08 would allow a young falla to shoot the big bit crunch through the bone into the lungs dead deer
120gn bullets would make for even less recoil
But it really is fuck all recoil with a suppressed rifle anyway

Thanks but I have told my lad it is illegal to have more than one firearm in NZ ! He's going to hate me one day.

I wonder if that would work with @TimeRider? Or would it be a bit late?
