    Good choice buying a 243.
Be aware that some projectiles are designed for exploding small animals and some are for killing large animals. Do your homework on what's required for the animal you are hunting.
The varmint projectiles may result in superficial wounds on bigger animals.

But the projectiles you use for deer sized game will definitely kill varmint type critters! Choose a projectile for the biggest game you think you will encounter and use the same projectile for everything.

I used a mates 243 (Remington Mohawk 600) lovely bush rifle and it was on its 3rd barrel - he had meat hunted the Ruahine Ranges 60'-70's, so it had tipped over a heap of animals.
But - I had a terrible time with it loosing Deer after Deer
He put it down to the fact I shot slightly too far back in the shoulder and - now days with all the reloading etc - I prob needed a different load.
The owner was predominantly a "head/neck" shooter - where I was never a good enough shot for that in most circumstances and went for largest part :-(
