Im looking for a north island map for my gps, I have been downloading free linz ones but let me down yesterday and bloody near got me in the shit.

I really like the format and colour scheme of the linz maps, can anyone point me in the direction of the best deal? or got one they want to flick off?

Free LINZ ones? Do you mean the 'Mr Purple' free one? Can you explain the 'getting you in the shit' part?

Topomap website you can download maps as you need them but my gps will only hold 1 sometimes 2 at a time. Went out galatea yesterday chucked the map on but for some reason it didnt work, luckily my ph had reception and we could use the maps/gps on that, she was pretty rugged country, I always carry a compass as back up and my mate knows the area but gps just makes negotiating the tough stuff so much easier.

Ah, so you were using the Garmin Custom Maps feature. Try the 'Mr Purple' topomaps instead. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ub5lqwhwvi...opo50.img?dl=0

700MB+ download. Put the file in the Garmin folder in either your GPSs built-in memory, or the microSD card.

Gallatea is a pretty rugged place to get lost in alright.

But just remember there is only two prominent directions to travel when hunting there.

One is Up and the other is Down.

I'd choose Up first as there's a good view from the top and it may help you find your way Down.

    Cheers

Yea we come across so many washouts, slips and bluffs. It was a simple plan, up one ridge cross over and down another....gotta have a lot of respect for the country and watch every footstep
