You can normally see and feel the protection circuit attached to the negative end of the cells, which also makes them longer.

The one on the left is unprotected.

You need also to know what their mAh (milliAmp hours) rating is. Not all panas are 3000-3400mAh. If they are low rated batts they will be fine in say headlamps or lower output handhelds, but they'll have limited runtime in high drain torches like the Maxtochs. Also some of the newer torches are designed for 69-70mm batteries, and shorter non-protected cells may have a problem.

Gadgetman - any idea what these comp panas would be? Would a metal insert spacer be needed for some lights?

They are likely to be around 2500maH,which are still a good solid battery. They would be great to use in your headlamp or small torches since they are unprotected. The danger with running in the Maxtoch torches is that the torches can be run on a single cell so you could run these too low. They would be great to allow your other protected cells to be freed up for your grunty torch. These are very good value.

I must make up a little spot welder so I can weld on protection circuits.
