Sorry, Clem, nice item, but as far as I can see it's a firearm, in fact a pistol according to New Zealand law. @Spanners @Blisters

At the last auction I attended someone mentioned that pinfire items do not require a FAL.

Maybe one of the collectors on here can confirm this ?

I would think that if it uses combustion to fire it's a firearm, but then pcp air rifles are considered firearms and there is no explodey bang with them.

If no ammunition is commercially available it could be seemed obsolete. But this one has ten rounds with it so i suspect it would be deemed a pistol and need registering

It is in the arms act under the definition of an ANTIQUE FIREARM.

Antique Pinfire firearms are chambered for obsolete cartridges and can legally be owned and on display in your home without any license. But you are not allowed to load or shoot them.

To USE THEM you must have an appropriate A or B cat license as per the type of firearm. Even if these guns are pinfires (ie neither centrefire or rimfier), they are newly manufactured and thus NOT antiques.

From the Arms Act definitions: Note the bold letter AND.

    "antique firearm means—
    (a)any firearm that—
(i)is held in the possession of any person solely as an antique (but not as a copy or replica of an antique); and
(ii)is not designed for firing, and is not capable of firing, rimfire or centrefire cartridge ammunition; or
    (b) any firearm declared by regulations made under this Act to be an antique firearm for the purposes of this Act"

In not setting a year cut-off, NZ legislation is a bit cleverer here than other jurisdictions which allow a late 1800's .455 Webley revolver to be kept as an antique, even shot on public land, such as Canadian law.

Pinfire because you cannot get ammo, in this case supplied with ammo, nearly as bad as an evil MSSA,

Yes, a bit of a Rumpelstiltskin he was. Very bad temper, clearly ignorant about basics of shooting and loading, and not here to make friends. Wonder if they were the same person.

haha I'm a bit dyslexic at times and read your last sentence as " wonder if they were from the same prison"
