These new are between $329 and $239 depending on where you shop and are lucky enough to find one.

The blade is 4mm thick swedish L6, which is a low alloy carbon steel with added nickel for hardness, the steel is used to make sawmill blades so its pretty damn good stuff and takes a very nice edge, this one comes hair popping sharp.

It has a convex edge and has Mr Bakers proprietary heat treatment. The blade has the heat teat colour still on it which adds corrosion resistant but is easy enough to polish out if you want a full on shiny blade.

This is a real benefit in the kiwi bush, being thicker than most machetes it will easily deal with tea tree, ponga fronds, bush lawyer and the ever present gorse without sending any vibrations up into the hands or arm, and will not flex of bend like a normal thin machete, does great duty as hatchet or small axe easily preparing firewood or clearing up at a camp, plus the long straight edge means it even slices bread too!

The shape of the Golok means you do not need to hit it with a small sweet spot as the shape allows you to chop anywhere on the blade, the tip will have more momentum with a big swing but even chopping up near the handle does devastating cuts into scrub.

Having a micarta handle means that its also very robust with great grip even in the wet and you will never need worrying about it cracking or rotting, the sheath (unlike modern Sword sheaths) is good thick leather that I understand was made by a saddler, both stitched and riveted, with a dome clasp. The sheath is open at the bottom so that sap on the blade will be able to be washed out and not clog up the inside.

The blade is 27.5 cm long (11 inches) whilst the handle is another 15 cm so will fit even very large hands, it has two lanyard holes and has three loveless bolts holding it all together.

The raw blade is 600 gm and the sheath adds anther 260. So whilst not feather light you can definitely leave with the axe and the camp knives at home and just take this and a pocket knife or small skinner and you will be set.

Cost is $175 which includes postage in NZ with tracking, or you can swing by and pick it up if you are in Auckland.

Drop price to $170, also realised I had not sharpened it after last use, 3 hours chopping sticks to enable them to go into a shredder thing and it’s still hair shaving sharp...
