Question Swamp Kauri for knife handle

As per title I am looking for some swamp Kauri to use for a knife handle project.
Anyone got any off cuts ?
Anyone know of any reason I shouldn't use swamp Kauri ?
I am based in North Canterbury so can pick up local or Christchurch or happy to have posted
    Thanks

Thirty years ago I used to use quite a lot of it when they were digging it out of the papakura army camp.
Its beautiful looking wood but can be a bugger to work due to gum content. Any heat while you work it makes the gum soften and it clogs sandpaper like you wouldnt believe.
Hand sanding is definitly the best option.
Dont oil it after either if its gummy as it will not soak in.
Best finish I found was a 2 pack polyurethane furniture finish but I was making clocks and decorative pieces from it.

Hi Dannyb I'm in chch I have a few bits of Kauri, Totara (or it may be Matai) & ironbark you are welcome to come and collect a few small pieces for free. However A nice piece of Oxford beech could also be nice.
I was just digging out a few bits today as I'm making a knife this weekend.

Also got various native timber, rimu totara matai (railway bridge beam on the west coast from the 80s should be dry by now...) if you willing to wait I can get a wide variety of wet wood off private land

Iíve used kanuka from my own property for knife handles. Not the most amazing grain but nice enough and hard too. Iíll send you some if you like?
