Vintage book on exterior ballistics stevens winchester newton etc

    Free to someone who is

1 Genuinely interested in old books

    2 Into exterior ballistics

    3 Good at maths

4 Someone who is into old Savage 250-3000, Newton cartridges and Stevens and Winchester antique rifles.

    1917 Copy of

The Modern Rifle Volume 1 Practical Exterior Ballistics. By Bevis Donovan Google will show you what its like.

The book has been wet at some stage but all the pages are free and flat and considering where I got it from its in quite reasonable condition.

I'm personally into old rifles ( old center fire single shots are my current interest ) but old books not so much.
I'm sure someone else will really enjoy having this.
There are some wonderful old prints in it, rifle illustrations, cartridge illustrations, tons or graphs and tables.
Pages and pages of log tables.
It's pocket sized and I can just see someone in the 1920's sitting in the field with the book, paper and a pencil working out the come up on a long shot ... of guessed range !
Clearly the Newton cartridge line were a big hit at the time and Bevis was hooked on the early speed craze.
This came from a deep dark corner of a Canterbury high country hut that I inherited a few years ago.

I'm not in a hurry to decide who gets it, but happy for it to go to someone who will enjoy it.
Also keen that they be someone who regularly makes a positive contribution to this excellent forum.
PM me and I will consider.

    cheers

Someone will be very lucky. I have a few early 50 and 60s pamphlets and books, and it amazes me how much stuff they worked out by observation, from first principles and intuitive reasoning. I believe all the modern ballistic stuff we take for granted today is derived from earlier work going back to Greenhill and the like.
If it has not been digitized by someone yet, and Im going to check that out it should be.
Ah, JR Bevis Phd, and JA Donovan MD, its quite well known.

    Bloody well spotted that man.

It reads " Bevis . Donovan"
So yes there were 2 authors and I missed seeing the very small dot.
I just thought Bevis was one of this very old fashioned names.

    Hi, @akaroa1

The book is not for me but why not post a picture of it and of one or two interesting pages inside?
