    WTB Crampons

Not for technical or for Hunting.
A mate is staging his 40th above the snowline and crampons are pretty much guaranteed to be needed.

Do you have an ice axe? Not sure of your level of experience but you must have an ice axe if wearing crampons because you cannot self arrest with just crampons.
If it is just for one weekend you might be able to hire them from an outdoors shop.

Hey @ROKTOY. I have some you can borrow for a weekend if you need. When is it?

make up some instep crampons from piece of alloy......need piece about 150mmx100 mm
make two cuts in from each edge about 15mm deep into long ends and fold so you get two long fat bits upwards to go each side of boot, drill holes and lace across laces and fold the other two shorter bits down giving two cleats approx 15mm high and wide sticking down each side of your boot...they work ok on john bull type boots.

Instep crampons won't give the level of protection needed to prevent a fall on steep snow/ice.

I am sure there was a thread on crampons a few years ago - warning that they can be bloody dangerous if the wearer was not experienced. Some also opined that an iceaxe was the first essential b4 crampons even.

Depends on what they are doing. I don't imagine a 40th is going to be summiting Mt Cook. More like stopping them from falling over when they walk outside the hut for a pee when they are drunk.

Kahtoola microspikes might be worth looking at, used mine a fair bit round skifield carparks and a but of snow tussock with a layer of white stuff. Wouldn't want to take them to he top of Mt cook though!

Ice axe is a damn handy thing to have around

@Shearer If I can't get hold of a cheapish pair I'll take you up on the offer, cheers. It's not for a few months yet, just heading into Lake Angelus/Angelus Hut.
I have an ice axe and have used it before, I have also hired and used crampons before and I am relatively comfortable wearing them.
Any walking wearing crampons will done sober, although a bit more support when heading out for a piss may be advantageous.
I have a pair of generic pair of Kahtoola microspikes, but would prefer something a bit more, more if you know what I mean.

    Cheers for the input guys.

Awesome place. Sounds great. Just hope it doesn't coincide with any trip I am doing.
