Hi funker, Mini 14`s intended for the civilian market are stamped .223 to promote it as a sporting rifle.
Just having a look at the Owners Manual for my Mini 14 ,it says:

"The Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifles are chambered for the .223 Remington (5.56 mm) cartridge. The Ranch Rifle is designed to use either standardized U.S. military or factory loaded sporting .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges manufactured in accordance with U.S. industry practice."

I have used a lot of 5.56 mm NATO ammo in my Mini`s with absolutely no problems.

If you wanted one that's marked 5.56 you could look out for one if the ex Irish police ones that started life as the select fire version.

Try and get a late model one (serial no. starts 580- or higher). Seem to be more accurate than older ones. It'll never be a target rifle, but nice guns.
