    WTB: Starter rifle

    Hi All,

Finished all my requirements for my licence just waiting for it to arrive in the post. Pretty new to hunting so looking for something to start off with.
Ideally a 308 but will consider 270 or 7mm08. Would prefer a decent scope and a suppressor would be a bonus. Not looking to break the bank but just want to see whats out there before I check out trademe etc.

    Many thanks

There are a couple of 6.5x55s on here at present that would be worth consideration.

The 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser with the scope for 600 is a good deal.

Buy a second hand suppressor off here. Get it threaded for the suppressor thread and you'll be away for 1000 bucks.

That's probably more in my price range. Being that I know very little about rifles/calibres etc would this be ok for bush stalking for a beginner? Most people seem to point me in the direction of a 308

It'll be better than 308. Retains more energy in longer shots. Less recoil.

Just more expensive than 308. 308 can buy NZ loaded for 1.20 a round.

Try aoraki ammo or ammo direct for 6 5x55 deals.

Is the scope on that thing any good?

Better than a standard 3-9x40. You don't need anything fancy. Much better off spending the money on going hunting with the original scope than spending money on a better scope but no hunting. Can't get experience if you're not in the bush.

.308 will probably be more versatile if you decide to get into reloading or shorten the barrel at all, huge selection of projectiles and pretty forgiving with reloading including going subsonic and almost always accurate.

Get a Howa or a Tikka but avoid the scoped package deals on offer. You'll only end up replacing the mounts rings and scope for something else anyway.

@HOO I have a Howa Hunter in 6.5x55 (stainless barrel, wood stock) I bought off a forum member for a good price which is just taking up room in my safe. Currently got a Weaver Kaspa 4-16 illuminated reticle scope on it. I'd let it go with the scope for $1k. Let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you some pics.
