    WTB Therm-A-Rest or similar

    Hi guys

I am in the market for a Therm-A-Rest and was wondering if anyone has upgraded theirs recently and has a used one to move? Don't have a lot to spend, most things considered

    Cheers!

Why spend anything. Just stuff plenty of moss, ferns, grass under your groundsheet. My experience with anything inflatable in the bush is it will go flat. Many years ago I was fluffing around half the night with a air bed that kept deflating and my mate told me to lie down next to it and it would not go flat...he was right. I have never taken another since.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

South Island vrs north If you camped on the tops you will need a spade to separate yourself from the frozen ground in the morning

Yes but the North Islander would camp below the snow line and walk up in the morning.
And just to add to the N v S...I see in a farm for sale ad that the Kaimai's were referred to as the Northern Alps.

    I have the cheapest(read bulkyest heaviest)thermarest.

Didn't take it last time even tho forecast was for cold.

Woke up to ice on the outside and inside of my biv bag and on the top of my sleeping bag and the two were stuck together with ice from the knees down.
Was quite warm thanks but i had set up on Tussok out of the wind with my jacket and any spare clothes underneath me.

Any extended time or winter when the ground is cold would definitely take and use it tho.

You're probably right, Spook. It might be due to my inexperience that I feel I need one.

It is not hard to fall into the trap of trying to have every conceivable item in your pack...if you have a good back, then go for it...time will see it reduced to bare essentials.
