Thread: 1 suppressor for different calibers

Hi all, hope this hasn't been asked before.
I am looking at suppressing both my centerfire rifles, one is a 223 the other a 260. I'd like to buy a suppressor that can be used on both rifles.
I know that the best option would be a DPT and buy two different end baffles for it, but I'm exploring other options too, particularly ASE.

Has/does anyone use a larger suppressor on a smaller caliber (eg shoot a 223 through a 6.5mm suppressor), I know it won't be as efficient but how bad would it be?

Yes done it plenty of times, there is hardly any difference when using dpt suppressors

Yep, my one works fine on both 6.5 and 223 (obviously has a 6.5mm hole in it)

I used one for 308 and 243 which is a bigger difference than 233 and 6.5.

Would you say there is a noticeable difference in noise reduction? Eg, the 6.5 is quieter than the 223?

Are you saying to not even bother buying different end baffles? Just use the smaller caliber and will hardly notice the difference?

From memory the difference between .223 (5.5mm) and 6.5 is 1 mm or 40 thou

half a mm (20 thou) clearance all around the 6.5 projectile as it exits the suppressor is normal, using a .223 in the 6.5 suppressor probably gives 1 mm clearance all around the exiting .223 projectile.

The pressure wave from the lower powder charge in the .223 is easier to slow down and cool as well so the larger calibre suppressor is not having to "work" as hard

Don't forget you can get two or more extra baffles just to make it epic quiet

Back in the day when I was testing our suppressors I found on a 223, a 30caliber suppressor required 6 baffles to have the equivalent sound reduction as a correct .223 caliber suppressor that normally comes with 4 baffles. A 6.5mm on a 223 wouldn't be as bad, and if you wanted better sound reduction you could always just buy another couple more 6.5mm baffles.

Exactly with the 308 (7.62mm) and the 243 (6mm) and about the same charge there was not a lot of difference. So with a 6.5 and 5.56mm (with a lower charge) there will be no issues.

Yep I run same suppressor on both 223 & 6mm and haven't noticed any issues.

Can anyone tell me what the lightweight suppressors are like for mirage and POI shift when they heat up, compared to the not so light ones.
Eg an alloy DPT vs a Stainless ASE shooting strings of 10 shots over a couple of minutes.

im running one for 3 rifles .303,7.62x39 and.223. most of what i read above confirms other stuff ive read too. mines just a budget thing presently.with new house inthe wings all spare cash is locked away for that.

I've done this test my self - smaller caliber through lager DIA hole and I agree with @DPT it is louder. How much that noise difference is worth to you is your own decision to make.

I've used my MAE Compact that is for my 6.5 & .243 on my .22-250, it works well but I want a smaller hole and dedicated suppressor for the smaller cal so am having another compact made.

I guess a key thing to remember is how many rounds you are going to fire vs the life expectancy of the suppressor, another reason for me wanting separate units.
