15" .243Win???? Anyone done that before?

Got handed a Weatherby Vanguard in .243 to sight in, long story short a handful of Core-Lokt's later and I now have a fair idea why the damn thing won't group - there is a very small ring about 2" back from the muzzle and the resulting groups are a random from 2 touching at one edge of the A4 (just to give you some hope) to throwing them all about the paper...

Anyone ever shortened a .243 down to 15" and run with it? What sort of results?

    Cheers

cant see why not if guys running .308s right down to 10"
will be a real flame thrower and hard on ears but chuck a can on it and play with fast burning powder and you should get ok velocity....

cut it and thread and fit a dpt with an extra set of baffles.be keen to see what velocity you would get doing that.

Done something similar to a switch barrel 7-08.

    22 inch barrel with brake launches Eldm162 @ 2655
    14 inch barrel with can launches Eldm162 @ 2450

what is the muzzle blast like .that's not a huge difference in velocity for a big difference in barrel length.

My dads mod 7 243 has a factory 18.5" barrel. I got 100g handloads doing 2900 from it, so a 15" could still be useful I reckon.

I cut one of my 708's to 15 inch with Dpt and it's still very useful with 120g at 2900 or 140g at 2740.

    Do it!

I asked Greg Duley the same question a while back when he started doing his bush pigs for clients. He said they had done a few at 16” and were running 80gr Barnes bullets under a charge of faster powder (can’t remember which) to maintain a bit of velocity. He did say they preferred to do 260’s as a minimum and the 243 will be hard on barrels and your ears.

Should do the trick at sensible distances.

Hi I had a Howa .243 that had a 15" barrel with a dpt suppressor no worries at all with it. Sub moa using 80gr fed powershok!

I had a 13” .308 (savage 99) that could still throw a 180gr RN at 2400fps. As you’re probably aware though, the larger calibres handle shortening better. It’ll still work even at lower velocities, after all plenty of deer have been shot with the 6x45. A slower, accurate projectile is of more worth than a faster one that misses the mark. Do it.
