Depends entirely on application, please add context.

If your mainly shooting the likes of hares or rabbits, i'd go with the 17hmr.

If you were also targeting goats at close ranges id go 22 mag.

Sorry I should really be more specific shouldn't I...was interrupted. Small game out to say 150 meters, suppressed and preferably shortish barrel. Semi auto possibly...

Semi or bolt would change how many options available surely?

I like 22mag . I'm not saying it's better, as stated above it depends on the application . Why I like it is the versatility, varmint rounds, jacketed soft points for deeper penetration, or subs if you feel the need. Bit pricey if you are going to run mainly subs but it's nice to have the option.

They both work. My son uses a 17 bolt Savage, deadly accurate and so is he with it. Hares @150 are gonski! Hares @ 200 are usually gonski. He's only a part time shooter, doesnt do the dial thing, or the holdover thing, or know much about wind. But if its in the spotlight its dead. I used a 22 mag for years, pulled off some amazing long shots in pretty atrocious conditions. Ammo has come a long way and the 17 is a fun gun to shoot with. But in the end it all comes down to trigger time, you spend time shooting' shit and you quickly become pretty competent regardless of the boolit.

Both. A couple of CZ's using the same mags and same FFP optics.

.17HMR for when the weather is calm and the ranges are >120m on rabbits and hares.
.22WMR for when the wind is blowing harder and the majority of range is <120m, and where you could run into something a bit bigger, including a deer (head shot only), and for night shooting rabbits.

In my experience, the .17HMR is inherently more accurate than the .22WMR

    For varmint hunting
My vote goes to the 17
It is a very accurate round.
A great compliment to the .22
    0m -150m point and shoot

I'll let ya know soon, just sold my marlin 917 and bought a excel arms 22wmr semi as I wanted a reliable semi that wouldn't split case necks and if need be could put down somthing larger with appropriate shot placement.
Fast follow up shots are becoming more important for target rich areas hence the change to semi

They are both good rounds, bought a cz 452 17hmr off another forum member late last year. It took a bit if getting used to compared to a 22 lr but now that I've spent a bit of time behind it, hares and rabbits are toast out a long way.

The weekend before last, my brother and I went out on a windy night and missed the first couple of hares at about 50 yards, we soon figured out why. We had been allowing for the wind and once we stopped allowing for wind like we would have had to with the 22 lr, we started dropping everything first go for the rest of the night. We weren't shooting crazy far (spotlighting on a dairy farm), I think the furthest was about 120 metres with the wind blowing about 20 km an hour.

I don't have any experience with 22 mag but I imagine it would perform pretty well in the wind. I think speed helps both of those rounds more than anything.
